Any diarrhea and vomiting? Kidney failure?
E coli in bagged spinach (http://www.cnn.com/2006/HEALTH/09/15/tainted.spinach.ap/index.html)
Yikes.
What's scariest is that 3 months ago, when I was still working in the food industry, we recieved warning about the E coli issue in spinach. And it took them 3 months to make the recall? *shudder*

Have they found a specific cause yet? I was told that while there is a recall, even if your spinach product is not being recalled, not to eat it uncooked. at this time there is no consensus about infect/uninfected spinach. Assume the worst.
I've heard that even though they *think* it's from the spinach, they haven't actually found any E. coli in any of the packaging plants, so they can't be 100% sure that it IS spinach and not something else.
My advice? Wash all your veggies and fruit REALLY well, cook stuff well, maybe cut back to fruit that has to be peeled (oranges, bananas, etc) until this is all over instead of eating fruit where you eat the peel (peaches, apples, pears, etc).
Cook hamburger ALL THE WAY THROUGH. Cook steak at least to medium. Cook all fowl and pork well done.
Hope no one else gets sick. E. coli is NASTY nasty nasty stuff to get.
It is the spinach.
And cooking won't help.
I should have posted this sooner.
Sorry.

Natural Selection Foods has recalled all packages of its fresh spinach and any salad with spinach in a blend because they are possibly contaminated with E. coli.
The affected packages have "Best if Used by Dates" of Aug. 17 through Oct. 1.
Consumers with questions can contact the company at (800) 690-3200.

Cooking WILL help - boiling temps will kill E. coli - trust me, I've been working with the stuff for about 6 years in various labs.
Washing might not wash it all off, but cooking it will kill it. Otherwise you'd get E. coli pretty much every time you eat chicken or beef. :)
I meant washing, sorry.
Yeah, cooking will, but only a few salads taste good with warm spinach.
Unfortunately, I cannot comment on this topic because I work for a certain agency that is recalling the spinach. Trust me, follow the advice as a person has died from this.
All I'm gonna say is:

*sighs*
So, I had spinache salad from one of the recalled sources on Wed of last week. We had it with dinner. The only one who didn't have it was the baby. All three of us have had some sort of stomach/intestinal problems starting with PoCobblepot on Sunday. He is already feeling better. I started feeling bad last night and I am slowly starting to feel better too. My 10 year-old has had a stomache ache on and off since Sunday.
I called the doctor about it, and there is apparently also a stomache bug going around in the area too, and since none of us has severe symptoms, we are in a wait and see situation.
Bleh!
Any other time I would chalk it up to Sara starting school again and passing on something she got there, but no we had to go and be all healthy at dinner last week and look where it got us!
Well, two nights ago ( Wed.) I went to a local sports bar, and happened to have some spinach-artichoke dip. I was told it was canned spinach and not in danger of recall.
Two words. - Guess not.
I won't go into detail.
Ack, Kharga! :( I hope you are feeling better.
