Now don't take this the wrong way. I am just curious.
Is this site really slow for anyone else? I mean.. I click a link, can go to another window, read a couple things, then come back.
Is that normal for a website like this? Is it all the graphics? Can I make it faster? If I donate some money can we speed it up or something?
Hmm.. it doesn't take that long for me to load pages, and I'm on a slow computer at the moment. If I had to estimate, my page load times are about .25 seconds. I notice it does take a while (several seconds to 15 seconds sometimes) when submitting posts, though. Is that what you mean?
I'm not having any issues at all, personally. Either at home or at work, both of which use different 'net connections.
Does it happen all of the time? And if so, run a traceroute from your box to sagafamily.org and see what happens. Could be there's packet loss issues between your network provider and Dreamhost's.
I do know that Dreamhost has had some network / filer issues the past month, from their report resolved by now.
On the backend I could possibly look at the database and see if there's anything there that may be causing an issue. But am not sure why it would pinpoint a single user if there was.
I get it three places: Home, school on my laptop, and work (pentagon). I'm fairly certain at least my work has a pretty large and fast connection to the internet.
If it isn't happening to others, perhaps it is just something in my area or just bad luck... no big deal..

???
Is your browsers cache set up properly? That could slow things down if you had to reload all the images every time.
Edit:
Ouch, you found your culprit then.
I don't know everything that makes up the tubes of the internets, but if it is timing out then how can I even get here?
Not sure what provider you're using or if you have any kind of firewall in front of you that prevents udp packets ... like if you have to go through a proxy to get to the internet in general ...
I did find a possible culprit though ... and this is from me to Dreamhost. Let me back up the database and do some cleaning and optimizing, then if it continues, I'll ask XO to open up a complaint/trouble ticket with Dreamhost.

Okays ... found a couple things that ~might~ have been causing database / cache slowness.
Fixed 'em.
If there's still really bad slowness, remember what time of day it is, how long it lasted, and what exactly you were doing when it "went slow". This is info we can then take to our hosting providers and say "Fix yer pipes prz!"
I haven't had any issues with the site. I must have bigger and better tubes connecting me to Dreamhost.
I have issues every once in a while, but I don't remember the circumstances, I'll look into it next time.
Menemas
I have intermittent problems. Today for instance. It just hangs and nothing happens forever. I am behind a firewall, but sometimes it just gets crazy stuck.
Maybe the WebNinja is tweaking today. :)
Yes, I am.
And Namae, Please check your PM's.
i have no trouble at home, or at mom's house, but go very slow at work. i just assume it's because i'm working through all the firewalls and intranetty stuff there. not a huge issue for me.
Frankly I've noticed it is slow. Um. To the point that I don't generally post as much as I would like in the mornings because it takes too long.
Might be my perception..I"m in a hurry, it's slow. No hurry, mostly fine.
Heh. :kia
Hmmm.
So let me get this straight.
When you ar in a hurry, the site is slow.
But when you have time to sit and post, it's not slow.
Hmmm.
Boy that sure sounds like a computer problem to me.

In ANY event *sharp glance at XO* Yesterday afternoon, when I had PLENTY of time, this site was unuseably slow. Really, wouldn't load for forEVER.

Note: I think Lyrima lives near me. Maybe we should see if Wystro and Gwenae have problems too I think Gwen responded but don't remember what she said.
I do live close-ish to ya, Beeks. Maybe 40 minutes w/o traffic.
In any case, it is fine atm. I've had some unbelieveable slow downs, particularly yesterday? Maybe the day before? I can't remember.
Could it be comcast? But other sites loaded just fine. /shrug
i wanna live 40 minutes from you beeker, regardless of how your internet sucks.
Don't pine, Noa. He won't tell me his personal information, he won't get together with me when I go to DC and he is a total hermit.
So. Doesn't matter if you live 40 minutes or 40 hours from this guy. Either way, we don't get to meet him.
One thing to keep in mind is that this site is a shared hosting account.
What this means is that our domain sits on the same physical machine as other domains/sites. Us paying for what is called dedicated hosting in which we have a server all to ourselves is far too expensive.
Now, what ~this~ means is that if we so happen to share our server with another site that is pegging the server's cpu, is using a lot of bandwidth, has a script that is going haywire, or whatever, other sites on the same server will suffer. It also could be that the machine we are on is at capacity. For example, if our site sits on the same server as ... oh ... a very very popular porn site .... or a site that some script kiddie out there is trying to dos, out of spite, then other sites on the same physical box will feel slowdowns ... not just the one doing/being the naughty.
This is why it is imperative that if there is a major slowdown for someone, they note exactly what time it is, and note exactly how long it took them to load a page. With this information, a support ticket can be opened with our hosting company and they can investigate the matter.
At 3:45am PST(or what ever it is now) It took almost 3 minutes each for 3 pages to load.
Grr.
I'm the XO. And I want this not broken NOW. :ana
Or whenever.

Well.
On Date: Mon, 6 Nov 2006 18:13:35 I sent in a support ticket concerning the intermittent slowness issues. All communication goes to you as site owner :P Direct your angst to the support peeps :P
