Title: What games are you playing?
Post by: Namae Nai on March 04, 2008, 08:55:01 PM
In the interests of keeping folks together, I thought I'd start a thread so we could know where to go to find people. So, what games are you playing, if any, these days?

As for me, I'm playing a little 9Dragons now and then, and sometimes I pop into EQ2 or Vanguard. I might be trying a little CoH/CoV if I can ever get back my old game account. My WoW account is cancelled though, and it was a little sad to see it go. I'm also doing a little bit of Orange Box games. Portal gets my recommendation, and Team Fortress 2 is not bad, despite all the massive violence

What are you playing?  ???

Vanguard and Tribal Wars.  I on very rare occasions pop into EQ2, but don't stay long before leaving again.

What free time I have is primarily dedicated to EQ2.  Sprinkle in a little bit of Legends of Norrath with that if it counts.  Toss in the occasional 9Dragons.

Eq2, on Jystana mostly.  I even got to see Jaysn at an event, though I couldn't reallly say hi him being a goodie goodie and all.

Though not on that much due to life.

tribal wars and astro empires mostly. in the middle of wars in both places. team Saga in tribal wars and raised the mild discomfort of the #2 tribe in the land.

also pop into eq2 occasionally when my system doesn;t feel like crashing and 9dragons from time to time.

I pretty much just got finally tired of WoW and haven't been playing anything of late.

Blaek/Guthric and I are in Telon, Vanguard.

We can be found in the Strength and Honour Guild as Tairn/Lyrima and Kiaria/Terim

We can be found in Saga as well, playing alts.

Nothing else.  I wish I could fit in 9dragons or something, but I've never been good at dual games...What free time I have is dedicated to Guthric and Vanguard :)

I miss everyone!

Hi!  Remember me??

I'm playing TribalWars with Saga, and XBox360 most of the time, and I'm preordering Warhammer Online, so, anyone interested, as it gets closer, let's organize that if we can.

I'm also going to start an MMORTS I found, called..  Saga.

Go to playsaga.com to try it out, I haven't yet, but if it's good, it might be a timewaster till the fall.

Considering checking out Age of Conan when it releases.  Running my fourth alt to 50 has made Vanguard start to feel ever so slightly "been there done that".  I'm thinking AoC or some other game during the off days might be fun.  Anyone here thinking of trying it out?

Blaek/Guthric/Crulec and I snuck into EQ2 last night.

Amazing how smoooooth it is.

Amazing how COMPLICATED it all is.

/sigh

Starting with Zhappy, nice and slow.  See how it goes.  Still like VG...just ..I dunno.. Feeding my lack of focus?

OMG I haven't been to the boards in like ages!!!  Not because I have no love for Saga, but because honestly I work like crazy these days and have very little time for anything.  Naturally, I haven't been playing anything either since the last time I logged into Vanguard which was what, like, in October of last year?

I have been playing Rock Band on XBOX with friends though, fuuuuuun!

So glad to see everyone here though, hope you're all well !!

SO good to see you, stranger!  What's the dish!?  :P

As for AoC, I don't even know what that is.  I'm not sure it could grab me away from anything even if I did know.  I'm kind of in my Happy Zone at the moment... which, if it existed in game, is probably somewhere inside a wardrobe located in Kelethin, filled with rainbows, Fae, presents, and giant trees... oh wait... that's the Frostfell Wonderland, isn't it?  ::)

Working lots and lots and lots.  Been in the US 1 year now!

Started playing City of Villains with a group of friends, lately - plan is to meet once a week for a group together.  Having fun so far.

Still playing EQ2 a bit but trying to enjoy real life too which leaves less room for games.  :)

Just EQ2 nowadays (12 characters hee hee), with a hit or miss 9dragons now and then. Still wanna play SWG and Vanguard more, but just not enough time.

Just picked the software up today (5/16), but the game servers aren't accessible until the 20th of the month, according to the nice man at Gamestop.

On page 7 of the game manual/booklet is the one thing I've seen that I don't like...namely, server types.

1. Player-versus-environment servers...we know what that is. (PvE)
2. Player-versus-player servers...also self evident (PvP)
3. Role-playing...here's the part that makes me squint: (RP/PvP)

By all appearances, it looks like the roleplay servers are universally PvP as well.  Speaking only for myself, I loathe PvP - I tried it in both WoW and EQ2, and in both instances, it was more grief and headache than it was worth.

That being said, does Saga intend to open an AoC chapter?

If so, the designated server (and I am unaware of what the names are at this point) will either follow the WoW/Echo Isles model (normal PvE server), or a RP/PvP server - as it does not, at least at this time, appear that there are any RP/PvE servers in the offering.

Any thoughts/opinions?

(( Edit: Apparently, if you bought a Special Edition, you can access the servers on the 17th.  I bought the game at Gamestop, and thus got a Mammoth as a mount...the information about the servers was on the code card for the mammoth, which I think is a Gamestop exclusive (although I am not positive about this).  So I'm going to take a peek on the 17th - if anyone wants to know about what the servers are like, let me know, and I'll post it)).

((Second Edit: Apparently, the 'Wiccana' server is the unofficial PvE roleplay server, along the lines of what Fennin Ro was in EQ1 as opposed to the official RP server status of Firiona Vie.  As all the official RP servers are also PvP, it would seem Wiccana is likely the best choice.  Making a guild requires a level 20 character...plus any requirements I have not been made aware of. ))

I am waiting to see the reviews.  I am pretty on the fence about this one.  For every thing I've read that I like there's something else that I don't.  I just don't know which side will outweigh the other.

Talk to me about Age of Conan.  What reviews should I read? I actually googled the game, but couldn't figured out what was the best review/place for information.

To start with, I have not actually started playing yet...my Pentium is a 2.8 Ghz, and the minimum is 3Ghz...so I need a new chip...or motherboard...or both <sigh>.

Finding a decent review on the game is like trying to find an objective politician, but I found a couple that might do:

http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3165045

http://pc.ign.com/articles/606/606369p1.html

http://www.theburialground.com/Articles/Article8.shtml

I used Google, entering 'Age of Conan' + 'reviews', and was immediately swamped.  A lot of the results were ads, but I was able to find the above sites before I gave up wading through the morass.  I am sure there are other good reviews as well, however.

So far, just talking to people that have played it and are sticking with Vanguard, it really does not sound like my kind of game.  What these players report are that the game has a "Nintendo" feel with lots of instancing, instant-travel, and non-existant death penalty.  Those reports make me cringe and run back to the Vanguard side of my particular fence.

On the other hand, the character customization sounds divine.  You can make your character ugly!  You can give your character scars!  That makes me run back to the Conan side of the fence.

On the other other hand, the game is reportedly very linear and the replayability is suspect because of that.  That drives me back to the Vanguard side of the fence.

On the other other other hand, you get to fight from the back of a mount and I got a drinking cape for signing up for beta even though I never played it.  That drives me to the Conan side of the fence.

All this driving is making me car sick.

Other cons:  No goblins, halflings, orcs, furry-critter people.  The forums are full of posts complaining about the low maturity level of the community, perhaps drawn there by the promise of nudity, and the mature rating.  No RP-PvE server though Wiccana is reportedly the unofficial RP-PvE server.

I'm giving AoC a try right now. So far, its pretty good... now that I have video cards that can handle it. Tried it with my old cards and got a whopping 4FPS in lowest graphics settings! So I bit the bullet and upgraded my vid cards (which I've been needing to do for a long time anyway) to a pair of nVidia GeForce 8800 GS Overclocked, running in SLI mode. Much better framerates for the most part -- averaging over 30 FPS. I still get some hiccups where it drops if I move to an area that has to load a lot of textures. I haven't tried tweaking the graphics settings too much yet so it might be something that can be resolved. To Lilica: my PC is 2.8 GHz as well and with the new vid cards, runs pretty well aside from the minor hiccups.

Combat is very different than any MMO I've played to date. Basically, you're in command of every hit you make (there is NO auto-attack), thus you're constantly hitting buttons during combat. They keep you on your toes by having the mobs shift their defenses which forces you to hit from a different direction for more damage.

I haven't interacted much with other players, so can't speak much about the maturity level. Can't speak to the instancing as I haven't done much. However, one of the character progression quests I went on was a solo mission that took me to an island all my own. So, I know there's solo content instances. Its a bit like DnD Online in that respect I would guess. No idea about crafting either, but I understand there are player-buildable structures like Horizons.

The reasons for the M rating:
Boobies! If you have a female toon, you can take your top off and flash your twins to the world. Your bottom is only covered by a G-string made from dental floss.
Blood: lots of it during combat. Decapitation too!
Suggestive themes: your first quest is to escort a handsome lass to the city. As a reward she hints at a good time if you find her inside the city. I also helped a madam at the local bordello collect unpaid fees from some pirates for services rendered.

So far it's pretty good and I haven't encountered any overly frustrating bugs. Just make sure your inventory has room when you complete a quest or you won't be able to accept the quest reward.

I'm currently on the Zug server with a couple of characters that are about 7 (Grimaldo and Kyletta).  So, if you wanna hook up, let me know. I'd be willing to move to the unofficial RP-PVE server too if that's where you wanna meet.  Lemmee know!

Otherwise, my main game is WoW, playing on Echo Isles as Durnig.

I'll check out the reviews--thank you Lannie and Grimmy for your opinions.  Gotta say, the words of Saga folks carry FAR more weight than anything else for me.

I know a lot of you will think it's silly, but I have been playing a little Second Life. Just social, no combat.
Title: Re: What games are you playing?
Post by: Lilica on May 24, 2008, 08:44:09 PM
Actually...no, I don't believe there is a way to turn off the gorefest.  From what I understand, that was one of the major draws it was offering.  But if there IS a way, you might likely find it in the options menu governed by graphics (much as in EQ2).

I guess growing up in a house of giggling gorefiends (including my mother!) inured me to that sort of thing.  I'll find out on the 27th...possibly later...when the new motherboard and processor arrives.  Quad-core monster from hell...the game IS going to run!

On a different note...does anyone log into WoW on the Horde side any more?  Hawkstrider Cowgirls...I know I likely won't have a lot of company if I do, but is anyone able to coordinate a log-in long enough to send me an invitation?   Please let me know if its possible.

And, no, Draci, it isn't silly.  I have a toon sitting in Second Life with a year's accumulated allowance...I stopped logging in (and paying) when I couldn't find a tract of property that didn't have all sorts of strings attached to it (landowner's associations that required fees and so forth).   I'm an anti-tax zealot in Real Life...why would I subject myself to that in an online world?  Other than that, Second Life is pure roleplay, and I did enjoy that aspect of it.

Well you may be right. I've been told by another that it can be 'toned down' by clicking something or nother.

I think Guthric and I will be giving it a try on Tuesday when our games arrive.

Unless someone has 2 buddy keys? /hopeful

Otherwise, we'll be visiting EQ2 (still love Zhappy) and VG depending on who wins the evening :kia

I kind of like the gore, but I'm kind of sick that way.  I am finding the first 20 levels to be very absorbing.  Very nice quests.  Beautiful world.  Some annoyances, but overall a very good game.  My healer is very interesting and challenging to play.  My assassin kicks all kinds of buttocks around and does it with a boucy ... ah ... pony tail.  Sonadin is loving it, so my VG days are likely to be limited to days he is out of town.  I think he likes it because when the females strip naked, they really strip naked.

I am less sure of it's long term replayability.  Only one starting area makes for a very limiting experience for those of us who love our alts.  But we shall see.  I find it is not really a head to head comparison with VG or similar games, because the playstyle is very different.  It has a more EQ2 feel to it so far.  But I have not really gotten into the game proper, so I may change my mind when I do.
Title: Re: What games are you playing?
Post by: Lyrima on May 26, 2008, 03:57:52 AM
well maybe with 80 levels and such different classes (if they are so different) the repetition of the starting quests won't matter so much.

Alanni's description seals it for me...if she's there, I'm there.  There aren't many of us Saga folks in one place and I need my friends in order to enjoy the game.

Now I gotta get working some other folks....

I'll say this...was in EQ2 last night and had the best fun I've had in a while.

I *adore* many of the folks in SnH, and have thoroughly enjoyed some AMAZING rp with them--such fun, wow--but after the RP is done, the game playing ...I dunno.

Or maybe it was because I was with Terim and Jasyn last night.  My cup runneth over.  EQ2 is still a fun game to me, but I'll be giving aoc a try tomorrow.

Gotta order it today..!

Wootsauce! Bouh and Bahl, yay for setting up AoC branch of Saga.  I'll fire up a guy on Wiccana tonight and maybe bump into a Lyrima! Gonna try using my favorite name: Grimaldo.

As for the gore, don't know if there's a way to tone it down, but I kinda like it. The slicing and bashing sound effects are very realistic. The killing blows are wonderfully sick and twisted... like if you use a mace in your main hand, your opponent will fall to his knees and you bash him three times on the top of the head. hehe Obviously, boobies are nice to look at too.  ;)

I'm also not sure of the replayability with only one starting area. Don't even know if the Destiny quest is different for different classes. My guardian on Zug just finished the destiny quest and got off the Island Sunday night. Then I promptly passed out from exhaustion. hehe So haven't explored the big wide world much yet. Haven't even gotten to a crafting trainer yet so no idea about crafting or building structures.  Kinda looking forward to building stuff.

Anyway, hope to see some of you tonight!

I have no personal objection to gore in and of itself, the issue is of course the children in my house who are more often then not looking over the shoulder.  It wouldn't add anything for me, but I don't know that I'd it take anything away either.

Oh, Grimmy that sounds HORRIBLE to me. Heh.

I've heard from two folks who specifically checked the differences what is the change when the box is checked; less gore no finishing moves..I think it is called Fatalities.

I'd LOVE to hang with you but every time I start up the game it crashes the entire computer because my video card is unhappy. I have to check into that first :( Probably take me all night just to fix it.
