Title: One more time .. computer help please?
Post by: Lyrima on August 18, 2008, 07:12:45 PM
so.

Gaming with my children is TONS of FUN.

I want to get our last computer up and running the game so all three of us can game together.

Problem with the other computer is persistent pink lines on the screen.

I've tried googling, but I haven't found anything that helps.

Tell me what you need to know and I'll try to get you that info.  I'd really like to get this up and running now!

THANK YOU!

How appropriate!

I posted the above and this is the quote that came up:

[XO of Saga] 9:31 pm: A whole room just to help Lyrima.
[XO of Saga] 9:32 pm: Were gonna need a bigger room.

HAHAHAHAHAHAH

It could be the video card or monitor going bad.  Are you getting error messages?

Make and model of the computer, please! I'm assuming it's a laptop.

If you can hook your laptop up to your other monitor, you can check if the screen problem is with the screen itself, or the video card. If it's the video card, they are usually integrated into the motherboard of the laptop so you're out of luck: You need to replace the whole thing. Check the warrantee to see if it's still valid.

If it's just your laptop's monitor then you can go out and buy a new monitor for not much money and use that.

If It's a desktop then you have more options. You still want to test to see if it's the monitor, but if it isn't and you're feeling tech-savvy, you can swap out video cards and see if that doesn't fix things. Most computer places will let you return a video card if it doesn't work, but check their return policies first!

Also, you want to uninstall your video card right before you swap out the new and old card, as not uninstalling a previous card can cause huge problems all by itself. Or, if your computer store offers the service, you can ask if they'll do the whole thing for you at a reasonable price (in the $40-100 range.) I kinda recommend this, because I hate to be the one that wrecks my own computer. I'd rather have someone else to be mad at.

As with any hardware change, backup everything before you start because bad things, while rare, can and do  happen. I've accidently destroyed hundreds of dollars of SIM chips once just by accidently brushing their connectors. It sucks!

Oh, and check your cables! It's a slight chance, but if you're using a desktop a bent or broken off pin could cause this problem. If you're lucky, a simple switch of cables could fix it and that's the least expensive thing to replace!

*crosses fingers*  ;)

It's my d/t and it isn't the screen, as I've changed screens with same problem.  No error messages at all.

Haven't checked the cord and have considered reseating the vid card.  Won't get to those today, but I will soonish. :)

It's my dell...I'll post (on the pink lined screen) the particulars of that computer when I go down there.

Thinking it could be the card :( Before getting my new machine, I'd switched out the memory and vid card several times trying to upgrade.  I wonder if I wrecked the card doing that :(

Thanks for everyone's input!
