Title: Word nerds!
Post by: Askari on September 02, 2010, 06:09:50 PM
I occasionally write (not very well), so I was looking back through some of my fantasy stories from the last couple decades to look for FFXIV character name ideas.

I came across a fantasy novel outline I wrote 20 years ago that starts with a young man in a village (as they often do). It had some interesting names, and then it dawned on me how the names were contructed...  ;D

"Grasna Kess" (the lead character's pretty female friend...or was she really his friend?)
"Rodia Mondugh" (lead character's female tomboy friend...ugly ducklings sometimes grow up pretty)
"Tolongoth" (the old grey-haired hermit who lives in the woods)
The "Roele phantom" (everyone knows about this ghost, but no one talks about it...)
"Wade Adter" (found killed along the lake, possible vicitm of the phantom...)

Anyone else notice the hidden meaning of the names in quotes? Yes, I'm a word nerd!   :tan:

I like anagrams.  The middle three make some very interesting ones.

Rhodium Gonad
Thong Tool
The Male Porno

I suspect that I'm also a fan of non sequiturs.

Yay! Another word nerd!

I've always suspected Devolnu is a word nerd. I "love" her name.  :smitten:

Doh!  That is the second time (that I know of) someone has had a name like that, and I completely missed it, the first being Tsol.  It's always the obvious ones that throw me.  /headdesk

Yeah, I've been tempted to steal "Tsol", hehe.

I think I may acually use Tolongoth ("long" in the "tooth", toLONGoth) as a surname in FFXIV, if I make a grey-haired old warrior.

The force is weak with this one...

I have no idea how those names are word fantastic. Once it's spelled out, I'd probably feel stupid for not seeing it, but for the moment, just lost...

It's pretty darn obtuse... I was apparently "in a mood" when I was writing this stuff a long time ago.

They are anagrams where one word is inserted into the middle of another word, mimicking idioms that contain "in the". See... pretty obtuse!

"Grasna Kess" = snake in the grass = the word "snake" inserted into the word "grass" = gra(sna/ke)ss = equals a character that betrays the lead
"Rodia Mondugh" = diamond in the rough = ro(dia/mond)ugh = equals a girl who grows to be the real love interest
"Tolongoth" =  long in the tooth = to(long)oth = old hermit
The "Roele phantom" = elephant in the room = ro(ele/phant)om
"Wade Adter" = dead in the water = wa(de/ad)ter

I also found another character in that story with a name like this "Buonesh Hatwond" (first name = one in the bush, surname = two in the hand).

I'M A NERD!  :---

Well, someone needs to make the grand adventuring character Rhodium Gonad...in the Errol Flynn tradition perhaps?

I sense a tale of vampires and carbon paper....

Also, I learned something new about Jasyn! Not everyone can make any anagram they see turn out naughty...it's a gift.
