Title: Permission Issues
Post by: Vilidius on August 22, 2011, 07:50:29 PM
Hi all

So we've had some trouble with new member ranks and permissions.  I thought it was confined only to the new TOR ranks, but then Sigil with his Rift Member rank said he couldn't see the TOR forums ... or the Rift forums for that matter!  So I think the problem might be more general.

So everyone is aware, there are TOR discussion areas (in The Guilds of Saga section) that are being used right now.  If you can't see them please post here.

The admins have been doing a fantastic job renovating the forums lately.  They deserve mad kudos.  But as we know, with any update comes the inevitable bugs.  So let's all be good members of the community and hunt them down and report them.

I can't see the forums.
Now I can.
They're gone again.

Wikipedia says that's called "Blinking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blink)". Never mind.

As I said in the shout thing ...

There are multiple ways of creating and assigning membergroups in the SMF system.  Only one way of doing so will do what you want to happen.

You are also nearing critical mass (for sanity) on the sheer number of forums to member to membergroup to permission set ratio.  To be frank, its a snarled and tangled weave.

I can either organize/fix it (with someone telling me which section gets seen by whom), or walk someone through how to organize/fix.

Either way, I would very strongly recommend not adding any more people / membergroups / forums until it gets cleaned up.

I would volunteer to fix it, with Imeriel's awesome help, if it can wait until next Tuesday. (I'll be on vacation at PAX this week.)
I do have some experience with these boards when they were initially set up, so if it's similar still, that should help.

I'm sorry things are complex at present.  I feel like I've multiplied the complexity without contributing much in the way of support.  We DO appreciate the work you do, btw.

Whatever works in the moment is fine.  I'm glad I have powers I can experiment with and I'll create a test account to be sure the ranks we have see the things they need to see.  In terms of general cleaning, you have my complete support to do whatever it is makes sense to do.  Not to say I'm the final word.  But as the instigator of this whole "board clean up" thing, I feel guilty enough making work for other people.  I sure won't tell you how you need to do that work.

Again, thanks a ton, and great job.

I haven't seen the Rift forum for about a week and a half.

It's because you were changed to "TOR Member" as your primary membergroup, which used to be something different, which changed your wide access to a much narrower focus.

I think I will need to write a quick-n-dirty on how to assign membergroups.

As for the complexity, it was necessarily introduced back in 2006 by myself as a means to accomplish something that wasn't, easily, with the software versions we had.  Now, the complexity is no longer necessary, as the code's scope has expanded.  Cleaning it up will take all of ... uhm. 10 minutes maybe.

Things should be 98% cleaned up and organized now.  I always anticipate an oddball 2% to hang in the wind and flap around.

And another 1% has been readjusted.  TOR peeps should now be able to see the quickchat.

1. It is nice to see you around Ime. These boards specifically feel a little more like home with you around.

Finally, Thank you so much for the help. I'm sarcastic and bitter, but I do sincerely appreciate the hard work.

3. Please tell Tanuvan I said Hi as well. I was wondering about him and hadn't heard a mention from you. Ah, Heck. Give him a hug from me, please.

2. I'm not sure SagaFamily can ever have only a 1% error rate. Kuladen, Kementari and Noa alone must be at least 32% or so.

Having the same issues Tanare did...commons, eq2, and play by post.  With my luck, it's my system and not the board.   :-[

Nope, you just fell into the same hole that Tanare did. You should be set now.

So, I sort of lost my ability to see most things.  I liked to see how things were even in games I wasn't playing but now I just see EQ2.

Any way to fix that?

And I lost access to behind the bar stuff.  If that even still exists.

I don't have access to the non-tallard forum.  You know the one just for gnomes, dwarves and jawas.

Thank you admins for volunteering to keep things running!

I can't see the TOR discussion area.

You're in the TOR Recruit group, which has access to the root TOR forum and the Artisans, Lore, and Quests subforums.  When you say you can't see the "discussion area", what are you referring to?

For a while I couldn't see the Guilds of Saga forum. I can see it now, though.  :)
