Just curious if people had any game music that they really enjoyed. I'll start with a couple of mine.
The "fus ro dah" vids have got me hooked on the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Theme (the electric guitar cover that someone posted as a response is also cool).

And for a totally different mood, I'm re-playing Mass Effect 2 and really dig the techno tune playing in the upper level of the Afterlife bar on Omega, "Callista" by Saki Kaskas. The song also appeared in "Need for Speed" and some other games and unfortunately doesn't appear on the ME2 soundtracks, presumably because it's not original to ME2.

My pick for best video game music ever.

Nice Corsair!
I have to throw one out to my oldschool EQ homies: the "EQ1 Freeport Theme" will be burned into my soul until the day I die!

Big fan of epic battle themes here:
EMIYA,
Fate/Stay Night Visual Novel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUs8FEsDUZ4)
My favorites, which are withstanding the tests of time:Chrono Trigger
Xenogears (which also has a version of the soundtrack done by an Japanese/Irish musical group which is just outstanding.)
Secret of Mana
Mass Effect 1
Mass Effect 2
KOTOR 1
KOTOR 2
Star Wars: The Forced Unleashed (which could be acronymed STFU, if you never noticed)
Those are soundtracks in their entirety. There are other classics "singles" like Bloody Tears from Castlevania.
I didn't even play Portal, but the end credits song is one of my faves. No lie! :candle:

I usually turn on I-tunes radio to a random heavy metal or techno station and have it playing in the background. If I am really in the mood for something special, I'll dig it up out of my collection and play it. Usually I am too busy playing to really hear the music all that much.
I love a few of the Hearts of Iron tracks:

It is especially good when it glides into Ride of the Valkyries. Also:

Is good too, however I think my favourite is:

Difficult to beat Age of Empires on this front in my opinion. :)
If you prefer AoE3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSvgBbjm09s&feature=related
Automatically came to mind.

I have never played Portal either but this remix called
This Device Has Been Modified v2 is pretty good - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IGS9qY7xko (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IGS9qY7xko)
Also,
M4 Part 2 by Faunts (the ending theme song to Mass Effect) is a pretty good song - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcrDWAuyqtc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcrDWAuyqtc)
Can't say I've ever paid attention to music in a video game before, I usually kill everything except ambient and UI sounds.
The opening of Suikoden 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f4eGQ9MIWM) my favorite RPG of all time. Still gives me goosebumps to watch the intro. Brings me right back to grade 9 :p
Also have to mention People of the North Pole ~ Mt. Gagazet Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6YMf4x16eY) from Final fantasy X. It feels very old, very sad, but it's quite beautiful.
I watch TV.

You're like my dad on that point. ;D I love playing Civilization 5 with music in the background while he wants it off, it is terrible for hotseat games. :D
Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core a million times!

Really, just Final Fantasy in general.

Okay, so that's enough product pimping for me -I need to go cash something from Square Enix. ;)
Jealous, that made me laugh out loud.
Nicely done.
lol I saw the title of the thread and immediately thought Final Fantasy and it turns out someone already mentioned them. Then I thought Xenogears but it turns out someone mentioned it as well. One that hasn't been mentioned is the song from the Assassin's Creed: Revelations trailer. It's catchy and epic as heck. It's called Iron by Woodkid.

"To Zanarkand" has been known to make me cry. It was the second video game music I thought of. The first was Katamari Damacy (no need to EVER do drugs again, if you've got that game):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpFFzWPzA2c&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpFFzWPzA2c&feature=related)
And there's even a Rock Band version of the Katamari Damacy music!

I'm quite a fan of Yasunori Mitsuda's work, personally. My all-time faves would probably have to be a good chunk of the acid jazz arrangements from Chrono Trigger on his Brink of Time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_Chrono_Trigger#Chrono_Trigger_Arranged_Version:_The_Brink_of_Time) album and almost the entirety of the Chrono Cross Original Soundtrack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_Chrono_Cross).

Brink of Time is pretty good. The cover art is odd, from what I recall. ;D

Odd is an acquired taste. ;D

My son loved Portal. He played through both games fairly quickly. It is a cool concept.
I have that final song from game one stuck in my head and I do like it. The words crack me up and the tune is eerie.
"Still Alive" from Portal is stupendously awesome. I have it in my iTunes rotation.
Best theme music ever, though, has to be Baba Yetu, from Civ IV. I get chills every time I listen to it. And I listen to it a lot.
Go check out this performance from Video Games Live (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6u_EWzmvI8E).
From the Wikipedia entry for the song: ""Baba Yetu" is the only piece of videogame soundtrack ever to be nominated for or win a Grammy award."

Wow. Pretty amazing. I think I'll go buy Christopher Tin's album. (And the conductor's coat, too, if I could find one just like it.)
In case anyone is interested the London Philharmonic released a whole album (psst, do we still call them albums?) of video game music covers: http://www.lpo.co.uk/heroes/ (http://www.lpo.co.uk/heroes/). Thank you NPR for edge-you-macating me up sumthin' good.

Jonathan Coulton wrote "Still Alive" and he has some interesting stuff on Youtube like
Code Monkey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4TnhemCEmc&feature=related and...
the fantastic ode to zombies titled "Your Brains" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v04H7_fFC90&feature=related
as well as many other interesting songs like "Skullcrusher Mountain" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z53WLtowYBo
and sooo many other entertaining songs.
Baba Yetu! Good call, Alirrin.
That would get my vote, for sure. Since Civ IV had my soul.
That reminds me. I love Pomplamoose's cover of the Angry Birds theme!
