Title: Unexpected good tv shows part 2
Post by: Rumze on February 16, 2012, 01:01:31 PM
I made a similar post a while back and thought Id do a part 2.
Ive been away for the last week, playing single player games to get my fantasy fix BUT ive also been catching up on TV shows.
Most notably Ive started watching two shows I never thought Id like.
Drop Dead Diva and Lost Girl.

Drop Dead Diva is about a model who dies and due to an error her soul gets sent back to earth but ends up in another body - aka a larger woman who is a lawyer. Its actually quite a surprisingly sweet show although the sap I am, I end up tearing on some episodes.

Lost Girl is waaaay on the other side of tv genre. Its a scifi show, about a girl who finds out she is a sucubus, and theres a whole other world that lies hidden from human eyes , with two sides of fae, a winter and a summer court. It also is pretty good watching , and not just because this show is a bump away from HBO material. The plot progresses well, the mythology builds up well , and there is very little of the angst and will she or wont she that you get from shows like Tru Blood. Also her sidekick has awesome one liners.
PS. A video on youtube with Kenzi quotes : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lub49fuxJWk&feature=youtu.be

And as always Ive been catching up on Nikita.

Any shows this year that have surprised and gripped you ?

I've been watching "Lost Girl" on SyFy. On the whole I think it's just "ok", but the Kenzi character is fantastic and totally makes the show for me! That YouTube clip of her quotes pretty much says it all.

As far as new shows go.  I've been hunting for something to grip me, the kind of something that make me hate myself if I miss an episode.

So far, I'm waiting on the official premiere of Touch.  I was a fan of 24 and was looking forward to seeing Kiefer Sutherland in something again, albeit a little different, with a little Danny Glover thrown in as a bonus.  I was also a fan of Heroes (YATTA!), and so my interest was piqued knowing Tim Kring (its creator) was involved in this project.  I'm still in the "I Have Hope" camp, having only seen the single preview/pilot episode so far until the show comes back in mid-March.  If it ends up going into formulaic territory, it will likely lose me, but it looks like it has the potential to be well written, emotionally engaging, and preternaturally intriguing.

Early last week, I was lazing about, getting over a bout of The Crud.  I wasn't looking for The River--hadn't even heard a peep about it prior to stumbling into it on the premiere date--The River found me.  I did not have high expectations, but decided to give it a chance before passing sentence.  Three hours into an apparantly 8 hour season, I'm hooked.  When it's on my screen, I can't take my eyes off of it.  The excitement is pretty non-stop.  Talking to a friend about it at work this week, I couldn't stop gushing.  Trying to describe it, I could only come up with "part Lost, part Blair Witch, part Predator," plus a little dash of Bruce Greenwood isn't a bad thing.  He says he wants to check it out.  We'll see if he actually does and what he thinks.

A show starring Nathan Fillion is unexpectedly good? I'll need to punish you for that Ryland.  :ana

That's my problem--most of the shows I like I expected to like. Although I was ready to hate a modern-day take on Sherlock Holmes, and the new BBC Sherlock is absolutely brilliant.

I forced my mom to watch Sherlock last weekend when I visited.  It and Doctor Who are in my Do Not Miss category.

Has Series 2 made it over here yet? I loved Series 1.

That new bbc sherlok is absolute gold!
Also in one episode of castle, nathan fillion dresses up for a costume ball in a verrrry familiar costume :P

Also Amy Pond is my hero. Ive liked all the companions in the dr who series since it restarted but she is my favorite.

I sincerely and humbly apologize for listing Castle in my list.
I just copied my TV watching list and pasted. But technically, if you haven't heard of Castle then it is unexpected to you.

And Sherlock is on my list to catch on Netflix. Thanks for reminding me.
