Title: Penguin fluid
Post by: Mixxi on October 01, 2012, 11:05:17 AM
Came across this at the faucet store. Can you imagine the marketing meeting where they decided, "Yeah. That's a great idea for a store display!"

I was expecting something much more...you know what, nevermind, this is weird enough on its own.   ??? You hang out in strange stores Mixxi.

To be fair, it is a Japanese company. But this was in a very standard California suburban kitchen and bathroom fixtures store. The company is named Fluid. Some of their other faucets designs are Jovian Fluid and Emporer Fluid.  ???

QuoteEmporer Fluid

Emporer Penguins, I wonder?

I keep imagining grinding things up to make a fluid. It is a little disturbing.

Whelp...the linguistics gears are turning in my head now. They clearly paid enough attention to syntax and morphology to craft an ad that has correct sentence structure and tenses. They also did a little bit with semantics in making sure their description made some semblance of marketing sense (although I doubt they really bring joy to a space).

However, I think their marketing strategy would benefit from a deeper examination of American English semantics that would allow them to realize that pairing random cool-sounding words with the word  "fluid" really does not make native speakers more likely to buy their product. It just makes us stare at the ads, scratch our heads, and post them on the internet.

*snort*      ;D

I loved this. Loved the post title which I was sure would have a great comical payoff. Loved the innuendo aspect. Love the visual of the penguins looking over at the sculpted excellence of the fluid faucet. Loved it.

I work with some Asian manufacturers, and this is better than 95% of the marketing efforts. But even the western educated marketing guys that get the sentences right still miss on key meanings they don't fully get. It's sort of cute and funny to me as well. I always remember how much better than my effort at a Japanese/Chinese/Korean message would be. Since I cannot speak any of those languages in the first place.

I would in fact go so far as to say if I were in the market for new faucets right now, I would totally give these guys extra consideration. Especially if I could have some of the point of sale print images with purchase.

I mean, think of the amusing possibilities! You could be talking with people you work with and say, "I just got my new Penguin Fluid", wanna see"?

Priceless.   :)
