When I arrived as the docks in the butcherblock mountains, it was raining so fierce I couldn't see a stone's throw away. I was on my way to Firiona Vie, to give some simple gifts to a young warrioress. Caladril had said Wildmoon could greatly use that which I kept and couldn't use. As I sat there in the rain, and saw the Maiden's Voyage approach to take other travelers to Freeport, my eye was drawn to a rather haggerd looking human wearing slightly more than rags to cover him. I am a Knight for Tunare, and me being such, I couldn't simply be on my way without at least offering my help to him.
His eyes were more blue then even Graevn's, and spoke of the hardship this soul had endured. Suddenly I realized that his eyes were the color of stormy seas, because they were blind to the world. I offered my shield to him, as a shelter from the storm. He accepted this, and hungrily asked if I had any food at all I might be able to spare. I happily gave him every ration I had in my belongings. He said he could only accept all of this from me if I would listen to a story he had to tell. In that moment I knew he was once a great bard, the voice that came from those dry and cracked lips was more beautiful than any I have heard. He told me this, and bid me to remember it well. He said he was soon to perish from this realm, and that too few could remember what once was. This is his song,
A lonely watcher upon a forgotten shore, a saddened face, that sees no more
He will always remember the days since past, the nights of torment,
Of people amassed, upon the shore to see his fate
Of the fire burning, and the royal state. Never to tell
Things he did know, then unto the one he did bestow
The knowledge the knowledge
Of his love to her, and the title he did bear of "Sir"
Fear was something he did not know
Care was something he dared not show
Love was something far deep within, there
Lying safely next to sin. For she was forbidden
And there were the laws he'd overwritten.
Sailing upon a solitary vessel, within his mind, thoughts did wrestle
For with her soul, his was entwined, and against the wind
He did race, to kiss the lips as soft as lace.
Exiled so long ago, he would return that all would know
Perhaps so that he might show, the eyes,
The hair as white as snow, from many past year ago
From the fire he had come, may haps his heart did succumb
From the ashes he did rise, this was why the sightless eyes.
Sight was useless when love you knew
So the watcher of a forgotten shore, returned to that he knew once more
And kissed the lips and held the hand
And remembered the love of a forgotten land.
I turned from him but a moment, as a careless dwarf brushed into me, on his way after an Aqua Goblin. I turned back only to see my shield, and all but one ration lying upon the ground. I still do not know who this man is, or who he was. I return to the docks as often as I may, hoping to see him once again. Maybe to learn more of him. He is, however, never there.
