I thought I'd look into teaching myself how to do 3D model-making, so I might be able to submit items to SOE's Player Studio in EQL and EQN.

First step? Software!

<googling, googling, googling>

OK, looks like a copy of Maya by Autodesk would be handy. How much does that cost?  $3675!

There is a free "student" version which you can download and as far as I can tell most if not all the tools are there.

Thanks, I may try that. Although after further study, it would be like learning to fiddle 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' on a Stradivarius.

I've been farting around with a free one called Blender, but the controls are so non-intuitive it's driving me a bit nuts. However, those controls may be based on industry standards, so I may have the same problem in all 3D modelers.

I may have to treat it like a new MMO and re-map all the functions to something that makes sense. Or suck it up and stop left-clicking by accident, lol.

My biggest problem so far has been importing the EQ2 sample cloak into it and getting the material and texture files to function properly. Part of that appears to be that the material file was exported with some of it's settings defaulting to zero.

Anyway. I'm still so green that I'm not even sure what I need to learn! But I've got time. I just want to be able to make simple (but stylish) shapes and textures before Landmark arrives.
