What did GW2 do?
GW2 instruments are a bit clunky to play (so were LotR ones, to be fair), selection is very limited, and they are mostly cash shop items only. Where as in LotR, there was a large selection that was readily available for everyone.

With the plan of getting soe all station pass and having access to their entire library , I'm going to have to really make time for everything on the horizon

I didn't directly play anything in LOTRO. I used files that I downloaded from the Fat Lute. And it was so easy and AMAZING. The RP possibilities were fantastic. Even just taking a moment to stand in a field and play something beautiful and lyrical was wonderful. I used to end a play session by building a campfire and playing something quietly into the night.

AND!  To add to that amazingness, the ABC file music system in LOTRO supported synching up with others (think about how you can synch up emotes between players in GW2) so you could form a whole minstrel band, go on tour, and give real concerts.  It really was one of the coolest bonus features I've come across in a game.

Agreed Jasyn. The concerts were great. There was an orchestra that gave concerts every week at the Bird and Baby, I remember. And Weatherstock was all kinds of awesome.
