...last night, omg...

UM (our rival school) and FIU (my school) had their first game against each other, ever...  It was insane... First of all, the traffic was insane... It took me over an hour just to get out of the highway because of all the people going to the Orange Bowl...  And then, I can't remember what quarter but I think it was the Hurricanes' second touchdown, there was a huge bench-clearing brawl between the two schools... I'm trying to find it on youtube...  I know Eninziel has pictures of it but, oh my... It was nuts...

You see, our rivalry goes all the way back to the high schools down here.. And for the first time it's at a college level...  It was like our version of a hockey match...

I still don't understand how they can be your rivals if this is the first time you've played them.

DeeCaudill

The NCAA and conferences have little tolerance for that sort of thing.  Teams lose bowl eligibility for doing this sort of stuff and that costs programs $$$.  Probably will see some season suspensions of individuals too.

I'm with Beeker. *shudder*

How is it a rivalry?
UM = University of Miami
FIU = ??

QuoteI still don't understand how they can be your rivals if this is the first time you've played them.

Well technically, football-wise, our real rivals are the guys at FAU (Florida Atlantic University) up in Boca Raton, but that's nothing compared to the rivalry between FIU and UM... It spans beyond sportsmanship...

Ok, let me 'splain...

UM and FIU (Florida International University) campuses are less than 8 miles away from each other... UM is the private university here, whereas FIU is the state university around here.  Both colleges tend to recruit first from local high schools (UM, being the more expensive school, about four times the tuition at FIU, gets to also recruit out of state with ease).  A lot of the players from both teams used to play each other when they were in their respective high schools' football team, so there's rivalry there already.  UM and FIU students in general have always been rivals, be it the music program, the baseball team, the women's basketball, or fine arts students.  There is ALWAYS competition between the two schools.  When I was an undergrad I remember going to a model United Nations debate between several schools...  These were supposedly honors college kids participatiing...  You should have heard the remarks between the UM and the FIU students...Not honorable at all...  And those were the nerds...

Anyway, it's well known that FIU, though a state school, is a better school than UM academic-wise.  But FIU has still not been granted the credentials to have a medical school, and just recently got the credentials to start a law school a few years ago.  UM has had both for quite some time.  Actually, their medical school is pretty good considering it is not one of the top-raking private universities in the country.  FIU on the other hand, has one of the top-ranking business schools and architecture department (one of the architects responsible for the original WTC design is an instructor here at FIU.  He cried for his babies, as he called them, wen they came down).  Furthermore, our campuses kick ass...  We have an awesome main campus (where I used to live) and an assortment of other campuses throughout the city including one right on the bay, the classrooms have oceanview...  It's hard to concentrate when the day's so pretty outside and you see people passing by on their sailboats...

Our campus is so advanced and modern that the NOAA (the National Hurricane Center, oooh the irony haha) chose it to be its home, and rebuild it in the same place after Hurricane Andrew destroyed it.  We actually have a new $50 million dollar campus in China that just opened up this semester... I think the Chinese paid for most of it, but it's an FIU campus...  The UM campus is, um, old...  And ugly...  And in a really expensive part of town so the students have to live in shitty old crammed places because that's all that's around there since it's an old neighborhood where mostly privately-owned mansions are around...  And they have no room for expansion... FIU has LOTS of room, even housing a "nature preserve" at the South Campus...  Our dorms kick ass, they're like luxury condos...  Anyway, when FIU was granted Phi Beta Kappa status, UM threw a hissy fit saying we weren't deserving of such an honor...  The nerve...  That really pissed me off because I was in that graduating class...

So, basically, what it comes down to:  UM is the rich kid that thinks he's cool but he's really just outdated and over-estimated, whereas FIU is the underdog that came in first (academically) and makes more money in the real world...For a lot less tuition.... And we just got permission from mr. Jeb Bush to start a medical school in 2008 (For future reference, if you see a doctor with an FIU degree, run...fast....  Not that I have no faith, but it's your life on the line and they're just experimenting with the first 10 graduating classes, I'm sure)

Except they do have a much better football team than we do...   :-\  35-0....  ouch....

But hey, our team's less than 4 years old and they're already playing against UM, something we didn't foresee anytime soon...

The Hurricanes have been around longer than my grandfather....  *snicker*

Both the FIU and FAU football teams are so perinnially bad that ESPN's bottom 10 rankings usually ranks them as a single team (F_U):

Somehow FAU got a win a week or two ago, and they had to break them up.  I'm sure a reunion is still a possibility

Last count: 31 suspensions and rising.
They are going to review the tapes of the game.
More to come...   :cow

AHAHAHAHAHA!   ;D

I've been trying to find clips of it on youtube.com but no luck yet... I'm dying to see it...  It's like hockey but outdoor in Florida...

I didn't know this but my brother told me that outside the Orange Bowl there were SWAT teams, MDPD, MBPD, FIUP, UMP, and even some Mikosukee reservation police just in case there were more brawls among the fans outside when they all left...  The UM crowd was shouting "Hell yeah, let's go celebrate kicking FIU's ass!" and the FIU crowd was shouting "Hell yeah, let's go do what we were going to do anyway..."  hahahah!  I wish I would have gone to the game, if not for the historic value of it for us alumni...

hahaha thanks Namae!

The CBS report says FIU started the brawl (which I don't doubt, we're rowdy) but the Beaker swears that it was UM that provoked and started it...  This was so expected though, anyone who thought it wasn't going to happen is being delusional so I don't know buy the coaches being surprised by the events...  It's the city of Miami for god's sake...

wait a sec you mean the oh so kind and considerate Miami Hurricanes got into a brawl? in/before/during/after a football game. I suppose next you'll be telling us all the sun will rise tomorrow <scoffs dismissingly>

i remember back when they played Notre Dame every yeard for a stretch of 5 or 6 years as they kept trading the national championship back and forth in the um... late 80s/early 90s-ish. the schools hated each other so much by the end that brawls were regular occurances there to. They basically had to stop the two teams from playing each other anymore because the hatreds between the schools was so high. i don;t think they've faced each other since.

other than ND though i think most of the rest of their brawls have all involved their fellow Floridians. Guess they want to be the tough team of the state. i for one am happy to see them spiraling their way out of the top 25 these days.

i do believe though at the moment the Canes are losing the most suspensions battle by about 4 or 5 at last count.

And a UM Alum was fired for remarks he made on the radio.

Namae Nai

On the second video link I gave you can hear him make the comments he got fired for. I really don't think they were that bad, honestly, but he does need to settle down.

They are bad because he is a commentator and shouldn't be saying anything like that on the air.
He's not some fan or a player. He's a representative of the station.

I was listening to the radio show at the time... I don't remember anything off being said on air that wasn't about the brawl itself... hmmm I can't play the second link, Namae.. it's asking me to dl something and I can't do that at work...
