Star Wars Galaxies: The Shrinkage

Perhaps as a sign of the health of it's once-awesome offering Star Wars Galaxies, Sony Online is shutting down a dozen servers - some of you may have received an e-mail to that effect, as I did.

For me, this means very little as far as most characters on the affected servers are concerned.  Only the Dancer/Rifleman (how's that for a bizarre combo?) that I created on Wanderhome, where I received my first exposure to Saga (in the form of GEO), is getting enough concern for me to use the free transfer service ( I have a Station Pass, so I can still access SWG, even though I no longer play).  On the bright side, it means I will no longer be saddled with the ruin of New Aurora's cantina - the city dried up and vanished into the sands of Tatooine, leaving only the ruined tavern/dance hall behind...why it wasn't demolished, I have no idea.

On the down side, it means I lose the GEO tag, and the wedding band she wears.  This was my very first 'Saga' character (as it were), and I would still log in even after Sony destroyed the game with the NGE, just for nostalgia's sake.  I imagine I still will, but some of what she was is going to be lost.

So she will be heading to Starsider galaxy, which I hear is the (unofficial) RP server.  Not that I play, and even if I did, I doubt I'd know too many people there - but if you have any avatars on SWG you are fond of (as I do), even if you don't play, be aware that the following servers are going away, effective October 15th:

I have to admit, I'm glad they sent me the e-mail...any characters left on those servers after the server expirations are gone forever, and I would not have been a happy camper had that happened.

1. Will it still be runned by SOE?  No.

2. Will SWG be gone for good? Hard to say.  It still has an audience.  Though, I do imagine that it will be on it's way out the door.

Rumor has it (from Massively.com, good source) that SOE is working on a second Star Wars MMO taking place in the Clone Wars. The is slated to be browser based very similar to Free Realms.

I never played SWG much, but I'm currently playing Fallen Earth and a lot of folks are telling me it reminds them of SWG pre-NGE (whatever that means).
