I wouldn't know about that one, Jasyn.  No cheesecake worthy of the name ever lasted that long in my refrigerator.  However, I suspect you have a point.

Is cheesecake a pie or a cake?  Are we even allowed to discuss cheesecake on these forums?  Around here, it's always a wonderful day for pie. 

Cake or pie.  Now there is a question that has challenged and astounded the culinary world for generations.  It is called a cake though it has no flour or leavening agent.  So it is clearly not a cake.  It does have a crust so it perhaps more closely resembles a pie.

BUT...

Those elite culinary masters like myself understand that it is thickened with eggs so it also a custard though thicker than your typical custard.

That was what popped in my head the first time I heard Han Solo say that.  But I'm assuming it has a different meaning in the Star Wars universe.

A parsec is a measurement of distance and it is approximately 3.26 light-years. It's an abbreviation of a distance corresponding to a parallax of one second.

Certainly, the quote from Han Solo in ANH is incorrect in so far as the writer intended. I would seriously doubt that it was the writer's intention.

However, there is a rational retcon explanation that fits in with the Star Wars universe. And if you think about it, it really does make perfect sense to say "making the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsec" is a boast that a starship captain would find intimidating.

In the Star Wars universe, the faster than light travel is based around mapped hyperspace lanes. The concept of using non-mapped hyperspace lanes (which would potentially have hazards, like gravity wells of planets, stars, black holes, etc) is, at best, being like the ancestors of the Polynesians who just sat down on a boat and hoped they didn't die before reaching land or, at worst, utter suicide.

You can also think of the hyperspace lanes as roads, with some being like Route 80 or the M1 and others being like travelling through Zimbabwe.

Obviously, your best bet, in an empty universe to get from Point A to Point B is a straight line. But just like roads, that doesn't happen with hyperspace lanes.

The full context behind Solo's boast, if he were to spell out every last detail for the sake of clarity would be: "She can do the Kessel Run in under twelve parsecs which, by the way, takes you through some of the most obscenely dangerous hyperspace routes this side of the outer rim. So I'll get there faster than you, because my ship is so badass and my piloting skills are so good I can take all these dangerous routes that nobody else in their right mind would dare to go near."

And the common tongue word, "buff" is dark elf rendering of the troll word, "boof" that is the term used by troll shaman to describe the magic spells they cast on other trolls.  "Boof" is believed to derive from the old ogre word "aboaf" that is the olde Ogre word for magic.  Though some scholars believe that "boof" actually derives from the olde Troll word "boova" that means "sparkly". 

Of course I prefer cheesecake to pie.
