What's your favorite boss battle from any game?

Mine is Drill-X from Skylander's Giants.

It has pretty much everything I could want from a boss fight

  • Clear & distinct stages of a fight
  • Telegraphed attacks (before Wildstar made them cool)
  • Environmental damage (and ways to avoid it)
  • Humor & good writing
  • Attention to detail (like the little radio signal distress calls beaming out when he's getting damaged that call in the adds, they don't just randomly show up)
  • Pop Culture References (Skrillex being an electronic / dubstep artist)

(the guy is extremely well geared, grinded alot for sure and didnt beat the boss = didnt get the key of the cave --> loot)

Probably this one. Even reaching level 99 of the ancient cave can be tricky and then when you make it the first time you sure will lose to the boss because you have to beat him within 3 rounds. There's actually a second way of beating him, but thats a secret  :---

The ancient cave is a randomly generated dungeon which you can go to once you completed about 1/3 of a story playthorugh. When you enter the cave your party starts at level 1 without any gear or spells, you get gear by random chests that can have anything in it the best possible item or the worst of the game, some items are in special chest, pretty good to the best of the game, you can keep those items if you manage to get out of the dungeon, but if you die in the dungeon you loose all progress. after about 20 levels theres a possibility to find an item that lets you exit the dungeon.
But people only use it when they feel like they cant go any father and thats the danger of it, couse you could die in the next fight and all is gone. Also on the SNES you couldnt save while in the cave and it takes alot of time to reach the bottom of the cave so i had the console running for days while i was working my way through the ancient cave. And then the feeling when you reach the final boss...the unknown, the fear of loosing your gear and the excitement at the same time. And the surprise! WOWO!

I really love lufia, its one of my favorite games of all time, i played through the game about a year ago just for the nostalgia and i actually managed to get to the last floor of the ancient cave and beat the boss in one try *Proud* which is really hard, if you know gold dragons, they hit like trucks.

The end tier bosses for world of Warcraft have always been done well in my opinion . Good stages , well thought out , and memorable .
From tempest keeps kaelthas fight to the fight against yogg sarron in ulduar to the klaxxi paragon fight and garish fight , they make it memorable , epic and engaging .
Even a fairly simple fight in theory like Archimonde in cavernous of time : mount hyjal required communication , team work , well choreographed movement and watching out for each other - a mistake could be devastating but not in recoverable .
They do great raid fights and interesting ones to boot like the fight to save the green dragon in the frost wing of ice crown citadel.
Never fail to impress - I'm interested to see how wildstar does raids as well considering the Devs pedigree

All my favorite boss battles were from WoW. I think I had the most fun in Zul Aman and Kara, but the biggest payoff was definitely when we got the Lich King down (pre-nerf, mind you). We hammered away at that (no pun intended) for about 4-6 weeks. Given our gear, we all had to get through all phases of the fight flawlessly. No one could be off even by a second. Crazy precision. The prepwork. The stress.

When he went down it was crazy close, most of us were dead.. enrage timer happening in seconds. Wherever we were, all Hammers had to jump out of their chairs and go find someone to hug, the Ventrillo cheering went on for an hour.

Thinking of that now, to me that's the pinnacle of what gaming can be. The work that goes into it, and the payoff. I hope to experience that again. ((Save us Wildstar, you're our only hope..))

The dumbing down of content is no joke. WoW did it, GW2 geared toward casuals. Even though I'm technically a casual now, in the number of hours I play, I like that content being that hard, and being there to aspire to.

A sad addendum: Val finally turned off the lights on the Hammers. They are no more. The site is deactivated on Enjin.  :'(

I'll keep it simple and just say that I'm so glad the fates brought us together well before that plug got pulled.

Favorite MMO encounter has to be Roehn Theer, the Godslayer. He is the closest thing EQ2's Norrath has to an angel, a Seraph sent to reign in the Gods from being jerks, then they tricked him into separating himself from his twin Swords of Destiny and cast him out into the Void. He returns with a vengeance and you get manipulated by your own deities (and an uber dragon) into putting him down, because his blades don't autokill mortals.

The encounter itself was fun, and it had a cool element where you could choose to break seals defending him, but that would result in more of his ancient power coming into the fight (and producing nicer rewards if defeated.) At highest difficulty, you end up facing two Theers, each with a sword, on floating platforms that explode with little warning, as Theer randomly picks two people from your raid to be bombs so they need to run away. Oh, and they constantly bring back adds.

My current favorite has to be the Spider fight in Brothers, A Tale of Two Sons. Mostly for the emotional impact and not the difficulty. Umm.. spoilers, if you ever plan on playing the game. And you probably should, to be honest.
Namae Nai, Wandering Troubadour, 60,000,000,000$$ reward!
