Greets all! Quick question here... I am looking into getting a new puter for Christmas and was wondering if the Windows XP Media will put any constraints on my current activities. i.e. I am looking for a gaming comp. but still need to do my online homework using word, excel and the like. I have been out of the loop with the ins and outs of a puter for some time ( my current one is 3 and a half years old.) I have a puter picked out, just want to know what this XP Media is all about, and if it will need further software to allow me to do gaming and homework. Thanks much!

P.S. Hopefully this week will give me a window in which I can be in the lands. I miss roaming the lands listening in on the maddness.  :idiot2:

Your Operating system won't make much of a difference, but Windows is upgrading to  what's it called, Vista?  in the Spring, many of the online retailers are offereing free upgrades when final product comes out, so look into that for sure.  As for XP Media Center, I don't use it, Home Edition is fine for me, as long as you purchase Office  (( Unless you like using Wordpad and generic Spreadsheets ))  your functionality should be good.

Windows XP Media Center is pretty much the same thing as Windows XP Home/Pro. It has a few new features (notably Windows Dancer!), and an annoying Media Center that pops up a lot until you've messed with it's settings to make it calm down. It's considered the 2005 upgrade to Windows XP, but nothing terribly different happened.

I would do as Kharga said, and look for a free Vista Upgrade. That will make a huge difference in performance, though. Vista's requirements on hardware are tighter.

Just to warn you folks out there; Vista's going to come in like six different flavors: Home Basic, Ultimate, Enterprise, Home Premium, Starter and Business. It's absurd and illogical to expect the average consumer or even the average retailer to know what the differences are, but so is Microsoft.

actually you can get openoffice it is an open source office type software that Sun puts out, I am playing around with it right now. I think I will end up sticking with Word, but If you don't need all the bells and whistles it works great.
