(The Movie Theatre Employee had some fun with the marquee)

Saw The Hobbitses last night. It was Epic.
A little too much forced 3D while viewing it in 2D, you can tell the eagles and the goblin warren are specifically shot for 3D value.
But I still marvel at how Peter Jackson has done the heights so wonderfully and seamlessly.

And Gollum's split personality really shines. You almost feel sorry for the meek part of him. And Andy Serkis brings him to life so well.

Go see it, Now!

I wasn't planning on seeing it in the theaters based on the reviews of critics, but thanks to Saga I now will!

I warn you, if you are looking for a word for word copy of "The Hobbit" this movie is not it.
However, if you want the story of the hobbit and other JRR Tolkein stuff, then see this epic movie!

It's The Hobbit melded with the appendix stuff from Return of the King, so it's all Tolkien, just not all Hobbit. Just saw it for the second time, but still not at the high frame rate. Can't wait to see it in 3D and higher frame rate later this week.

How can I wait another year?!

PinkRose

Please tell me what you think of the 48 frames.
I'm really leery as to what that's going to look like.
And only on your say-so will I see it like that.

I have come to trust PJ (although I kind of loathe most of his other movies). But this higher frame rate thing is something he believes in, so I'm willing to give it a shot.

We saw it in 2D, 24fps while we were in Dallas visiting the family.  We ended up on the 3rd row from the screen on the far right corner, so it was a suboptimal viewing experience, but we enjoyed the movie.  We intend to see it in 48fps 3D now that we are back home and can schedule it a bit better.

Having seen the lower-framerate, 2D version (twice!) and the high-framerate 3D version, I have mixed feelings. The lower framerate is more filmic, but the battle scenes and certain other high-movement/high-detail scenes are amazing in the higher frame rate. If I go see it again (and I probably will), I will probably choose the 3D high-framerate version.

And I still can't find Peter Jackson's cameo, although I have two guesses.

Titia

Saw it this evening in 3D and I can't say I noticed anything wrong with the 48fps. Details get sharper but that's all and t's pretty cool so I really don't see why it got so much bad press during sneak peeks.

*spoiler (sort of) now*
Lots of material comes from the appendix of LOTRO and given the current pace of the action I don't see how they can get a thrid movie out of the Hobbit itself. As the second film is titled 'Smaug desolation' and the third 'There and back again', my guess is that the third one will be more targeted at the rise of Sauron and the hunt for Gollum by Aragorn & others (despite that pretty & shiny net movie about that episode). Any one wants to play the guess game ? :)

Mixxi

Our local theatre shows it in all three version (2D and 3D regular framerate and 3D high framerate) so it's kind of fun to compare. I still haven't seen the 3D regular framerate. Has anyone seen that version?

Alirrin

I thought the three versions were 2D 24fps, 2D 48fps, and 3D 48fps? I didn't think there was a 3D 24fps made.

I did't think there was a 2D 48fps, as that technology had to be seen in 3D.
But the interwebs have failed me.

Here's a link to the theatre near us http://www.fandango.com/century20oakridgeandxd_aarbx/theaterpage

They've got 2D regular frame rate, 3D regular frame rate, and 3D HFR.

There's a FAQ buried within TheHobbit.com from what was likely an earlier version of the site.  To support what you already believed, it indicates that the formats for the film are 2D, 3D, & High Frame Rate 3D.  Two additional formats also exist: IMAX & IMAX 3D.

I was hoping to see a silent version in black and white!  Or as a 3D radio programme. :(

Mixxi

I wouldn't mind the 3D radio programme!

I think I wore out the cassette tapes I made of the BBC Lord of the Rings back in the early 80's. I was very disoriented at the beginning of the LOTR movies, because for decades, Ian Holm had been FRODO to me, not Bilbo. If you haven't ever heard it, I highly recommend it. I had a total voice-crush on the guy who played Pippin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lord_of_the_Rings_%281981_radio_series%29
