He sat on the hillside a short distance from the band of four hunters. It was the druid and her barbarian with the ever-present rogue and one other in wolf form that he did not recognize. He glanced from them to the monolith surrounded by ogres and back again. In his invisible cloak he crept closer to listen to their conversation.

"Do not provoke Zek more, the Shaman's are his minions. By staying, you may endanger us all. Please Korg, GO NOW" the druid demanded.

He watched the barbarian reluctantly leave the other three and gleefully wrung his hands. She plays into my hands beautifully. Now for the other two. He watched the three attack the ogre ring viciously and repeatedly, waiting for a moment of weakness to reveal itself.

The looting of one of the corpses brought him his first opportunity. A chipped bone bracelet was being discussed by the group. The rogue desired it for wisdom to learn skills and the druid for its powers. The druid placed the bracelet upon her wrist and offered the rogue the other she had removed. As the exchange was reviewed, he quickly cast a minor spell of avarice upon the two unnoticed by all.

The next moment of weakness surprised even him. The one in wolf form suddenly disappeared, a victim of LD's cold hand. The rogue and druid quickly began a decline in their battle with the ogres. The force of the ogres too great for the reduced ranks and before long the druid's corpse lay upon the ground. He stole that moment of her falling to cast upon the rogue again, this time adding anger to the spell of avarice.

When the druid returned, the rogue began to berate her. She had died and so they had lost their foothold upon the ogres ring. The rogue was angry at her, accusing her of folly in battle. Now free of the avarice spell herself, she could see his unfettered desire for the bracelet and thought it to be the underlying cause of his outburst. She became enraged with the rogue's apparent greed and tossed the bracelet to him. She turned and left in disgust.

He almost burst out laughing with glee. This was too perfect. Not only was she alone but she had even removed the bracelet that increased her powers. She would be so easy for him to manipulate through his plan if this beginning was any indication.

With total self-satisfaction he sat down among the ogres and began to drink ale and celebrate their latest victory and his.

He had been smiling to himself, he could see how successfully his plan was working. The smile dropped from his face immediately when he saw the female Warrior. He pulled back quickly and grimaced when her sight passed over the spot upon which he hid. She had not seen him but he could take no chances. He watched their movement across the plains for several moments and then followed from a great distance, undetectable.

He would not interefere with the Druid until the female Warrior was well away. The others she was now gathered with concerned him not at all. He snickered at their efforts against the ogres. Zek was not sending reinforcements quickly and none that did arrive held items of value.

When the Druid was alone again, he would step up his efforts and execute the final stages of his infallible scheme.

There were many new ones around her now, he caught some of their names in snatches of conversation, Dhergel, Mithlin, Caillou and the wolfen one named Menemas. They were drinking heavily and laughing and dancing. He saw another opportunity to interefere with the one they called princess. He eyed the others carefully and then decided on elven. He extracted a tiny blue vial from inside his robe. As the partiers danced about, he emptied the liquid into Quea's draft left untended at the bar. He slipped into the shadows once more.

If it was possible for one such as him to feel joy than that is what he felt. He laughed out loud and saw the druid turn to search for him. It was perfect, now the Barbarian would return to battle and war and once more to Zek. There was none to hold back his rage that would soon be brewing.

He nearly ran to Zek to tell him that all was complete but thought better of it. Zek was not interested in details only results. On a piece of parchment he wrote with blood. "All is prepared my duties complete. The barbarian will return to you soon." He placed the parchment inside the carrion to be carried by the griffon to Zek.

The diary that he had been holding was tossed to the ground, soiled and discarded.
