Title: TV show recommendations
Post by: Anaris on June 08, 2010, 09:54:51 PM
OK so I tried to find my old post on this subject here but can't find it for whatever reason.  I have -literally- run out of things to watch during my workouts. Just wrapped up Seasons 1 and 2 (what's available) of Party Down and the other shows I watch have come to season finale (30 Rock and Community).

I have the bad luck of loving shows that get cancelled pretty quickly.  Case in point, two of my favorite shows are Arrested Development and Firefly.  Then there's Lucy Daughter of the Devil, Battlestar Galactica, Better Off Ted, Ergo Proxy, and Queer As Folk.  All have either ended or been cancelled.  I also love It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, South Park, Weeds (kind of), The Daily Show, and the Colbert Report. Those five, are thankfully still going strong, but the last two I prefer to watch while not working out.  I liked the first three seasons of Scrubs and the first four seasons of Project Runway.  Very sad about what those shows have turned into, so haven't watched in a few seasons now.

If you guys could recommend some shows similar to the above-listed I would be much obliged.   I've asked this before and had Buffy The Vampire Slayer recommended.  I tried it, could not get past Episode 3, just not my kind of humor/cup of tea.

I have the attention span of a....an Ana.  I have to do a million things at once or I lose interest in the one or two things I may be doing at a time.  I work out an hour to an hour and a half every day so that's like 2-3 shows a day I need to watch unless I take a fitness class at the gym.  I had to watch Keith Olbermann during my workout today 'cause I've got nothing else, and he is -no- workout material...

PS.  I'll admit it.  I also like Glee.  Don't judge.
PSS.  I also like BBC period pieces, but I've seen them all up to this year.  Again, don't judge.  Jane Austen FTW.  8(

Some of my favorites are on your list.  Some others that I have been getting into, which are all available on Cable TV are:  Showtime series Dexter, United States of Tara, and Californication.  Recently I've been watching the back episodes of Trueblood on HBO, which I also like though not as much as the first three.  I am not a series watcher unless it is available on On Demand and I can watch it whenever I feel  like it.  I don't do schedules well.

I also watch whatever is on the history channel unless they are running stuff on World War 2 ... bleh.  I love Ghost Hunters and other shows of that ilk.  Oh, and The Dog Whisperer.

It is rare that I watch actual TV, but I liked Penn & Teller's Bullshit! on Showtime. It's probably a lot more like the Daily Show and the Colbert Report than anything else you have listed and it's more racy... they definitely take advantage of being on late at night on Showtime.

"Criminal minds" is pretty much the only show I'm into right now. It remains at good level after 5 years but I'm not sure if it's currently showing in the US. "Fringe" is also very good but very weird even for an X-Files fan.

"How I met your mother" had a fun first season but I haven't seen the other so I'm not sure...

"Big Bang Theory" for sitcom (first two seasons are out on DVD). Fantastic nerd humor. "Dexter" for dark humor crime drama (first three seasons are out on DVD). Those are my two fave TV shows after Firefly and Arrested Development.

USA has a lot of OK stuff. White Collar (suave ex-thief/conman forced to team with an FBI agent). Royal Pains (nice-guy doc making house calls to the rich in the Hamptons). Burn Notice (burned spy trying to clear his name and helping people in Miami). Psych (smart-ass fake psychic solving crimes). None of these are OMGAWESOME, but they're OK to kill time with.

SyFy has some shows that are OK too. Eureka (normal guy cop in a secret government town of super geniuses). Warehouse 13 (secret government stockpile of supernatural/hightech artifacts and the people who gather/protect them).

"So You Think You Can Dance" is a fun reality show. Very talented young-adult dancers compete in a variety of styles. Unlike a lot of reality shows, these people have real talent. Don't judge me!

I also usually enjoy Mythbusters.

Something you could check out Bella is a site I like to use , Ninjavideo.net  . They update the lineup about every night at midnight or so to post that night's top rated broadcasts. They also have movies , usually right after they are released. They archive just about every season of of most of the popular shows as well. They also normally do some of the BBC broadcasts too. I watched Avatar on the site about a week after it was released at the theater in dvd quality , it was from a screener :P

I have to agree with Titia about Fringe , personally I don't watch TV much so I just catch all the shows I like online. House , Smallville , Fringe , Bones , Vampire Diaries , and pretty much any of the Stargate series. The new one Stargate Universe is pretty good. If you do decide to check out new shows Ninjavideo should have all of the previous episodes if you want to catch up to the current ones.

I just ordered and received the 1st and only season of Moonlight on DVD.  16 episodes.  Costs $20 plus shipping on Amazon.

Reminiscent of Twilight...vampire/human romance.  The guy vamp is a PI..the blonde human is a reporter for a sleezy newspaper rag.

Natural fit for a crime drama with a supernatural twist.  It got cancelled because of the screenwriter's guild strike in.....'07, I think.

Had a pretty huge fan base that are probably still hoping it will be revived.

Reruns are on occasionally.

Hmmmm thanks so much!  I'll have to check all these out! I'm like Bou, I don't watch tv  or wait for shows.  Everything I watch is from either Hulu.com, Netflix, or the show's own site.  I also have Media Center so I just record stuff when it airs if it's on Showtime or HBO or whatever, then watch later.

I remember watching Dexter when it first came out and not liking it much (mostly because...sorry, but that is -not- the real Miami, so it annoyed me)...  However, my brother, who has similar taste in television, did mention to me that it got considerably better after the first season so I'll have to go back and check it out.  And OMG I forgot about Californication!  I do like that show a lot... Hank Moody has some of the best, wittiest one-liners I've seen in a long time.  But alas, I've seen all those episodes too, save for this last season I'm missing some. I've read the Sookie Stackhouse novels TrueBlood is based on.  I hate the casting of the show.  Kills what I already imagined them all to look/be like so I kind of avoid TrueBlood.  Love, love, love the theme song though...

Has anyone seen Rescue Me?  Someone mentioned that to me saying it was a dark comedy of sorts but I never heard of it before.  It's with Dennis Leary.  I did hear "Fringe" was good, too.  And yeah, I dig vampires but mostly cause Vampires always dress smashing.  I might have to check these vamp recommendations if only for fashion...  ;-)

Now WHY did Arrested Development get cancelled!  So many people loved that show!!  8(  I hear they're coming out with a movie though, to tie up loose ends...

Thanks again, I'll look into these and check out that Ninja site.

Yeah, the sad truth is you have so much of the best stuff covered already. In fact, several shows I wanted to like but failed to grab me are here too...like Weeds and True Blood. (Weeds season one was really cool...and then it faded.)

Firefly...A.D.....and of course Daily/Colbert...the best.

I'll toss in an oddity that is a series, on DVD, and I think highly of....Avatar, the Last Airbender. It is in the anime style, but the actual animation is way better than you expect from tv these days, and the story is actually kind of cool. (Live action movie version of the first story arc is due out later this year.) Pretty sure Namae will back me on the recommendation.
:)

Oh, and maybe the HBO series Rome?

Have you done the Mad Men thing? Super cool, stylish as heck, great dialogue, and excellent characterization...

If you have watched Weeds more than once and recall the lines....what do you call the thing between the %$$ and the @8@^ ?.....the coffe table.

I love Dexter, but then I have never been to Miami so have no idea if it's close or what.  If you have to, pretend it's somewhere else, cause the show is great.  I forgot Rome!  That was a load of fun!  And Tudors was good too.  I did not like Trueblood at first, but it has kind of grown on me.  United States of Tara still gets a recommendation too!

Oh, and I like "Castle" too (mystery writer teams up with cop to solve murders). Mostly due to leftover man-crush from when Nathan Fillion played Capt. Mal Reynolds in Firefly. He brings the same charm/wit to this role.

Wait, what?! Captain Mal's in a show?!   *goes to Netflix*

You know, I'm going to marry Captain Mal when I grow up.  *nod*

Yes, and Morena Baccarin (Inara Serra from Firefly) is deliciously wicked in the new updated version of "V" as the leader of the nefarious reptilian aliens.

The first season of "V" just ended. It started a little slow, but finished with a bang. Not super fantastic, but it has its moments. It got renewed for a second season, so I'll be interested to see what they do.

Or I should say... I'll be interested to watch Morena Baccarin be deliciously wicked some more. As Jayne would say, "I'll be in my bunk."

And speaking of Jayne from Firefly, he's pretty good in "Chuck", which I think just finished season 2. It's worth checking out. Goofy computer nerd gets a bunch of spy-data downloaded into his head and hilarity ensues. It's a cute/funny show. Baldwin plays a tough/gruff government agent that pulls a lot from Jayne.

Ok , I forgot Castle. I love that show too. The Mentalist is a good one and I also enjoy Legend of the Seeker which is based off the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. Chuck , as mentioned by Askari , is actually on episode 19 in season 3 ... heh I like that one too :P . I am with you on lamenting the loss of Firefly/Serenity though Bella , I loved that show. One of the Castle episode , as he is trying on Halloween costumes he actually comes out in the outfit he wore as Captain Mal.

I have not seen Tudors but have heard good things , and a show that I surprised myself by liking was Spartacus though it seems like it was fairly limited in episodes. Plus it was pretty bloody and sexually oriented , not a remake of the movie. Lucy Lawless actually played the leading female role , though she did not have an action part.

Oh and Corsair , if you like much anime besides Avatar .... Anime-Media.com has a nice selection. Darker than Black was an awesome series while it lasted though normally Bleach is about the only one I follow consistantly. To many fillers though as they wait on the manga.

Well, I gave both Castle and Dexter a shot...

Castle, I saw two episodes (the Halloween one because I couldn't resist him in his Captain Mal uniform, funny!) and another one about some serial killer trying to lure the female detective and using Castle's novel.  I wasn't overly thrilled, but I've never been a fan of cop shows.  Nathan Fillion, however, was brilliant as always.  I really liked him in the show, it was everything else that didn't quite do it for me.

Dexter...  Yeah, again, not a fan of cop shows, even if this one is with a twist.  I found his cop sister to be too annoying for me to want to keep watching...heh.

I saw the pilot for V and in spite of sexy Ms. Baccarin with her chic haircut, it didn't hold my interest.

The Tudors I've seen in the past, and I did enjoy it.  I saw the first four episodes a while back, but haven't seen the rest of the show yet.  Not hooked, but enjoyable.  I think mostly because of the costuming and cinematography.  I'll give this one another chance and pick up where I left off.

Silly enough, I've been finding Doctor Who mildly amusing, so I've been watching that on instant Netflix till I find something better.  I never liked this show much before, but I guess it's the old beggars can't be choosers thing!

Thanks again all!

*giggle* Corsair, you're too funny... Ok ok I'll watch Avatar tomorrow or Friday and see how it fares...  Or maybe later tonight if I'm done with work and all... But does this have anything to do with James Cameron's "Avatar" though?  'Cause I'm in the minority on that one.  I thought it was okay but was restless/bored after a while (visuals were great but the storyline dragged on and on for something so predictable)...

Thanks again!  :smitten:

No no, not any 8 foot blue people here...this is about a few young rebels out to save the galaxy from he evil emperor. Darth Ozai...no wait....that's not it.

It is good though. Each episode is it's own little tale, but threads are woven through the entire series to it's conlcusion really well. It was planned to be a huge story arc, with 3 large sub arcs, each arc with a number of episodes...rather than having it become a hit and turning it into an ongoing series forever, they kept it to 30-some episodes, and called it done. Smart people.

My son Alex is Sakka. Seriously. You'll get that when you see a few episodes......

haha well you've sold me at "few young rebels"...  Also, this sounds similar to the Ergo Proxy anime scheme as far as keeping it to 20- or 30-something episodes and calling it done.  There might just be something to that formula for me....maybe that's why my favorite shows are all over?  hah...  I think maybe I'll start watching tonight....

Yay!   :bdg

think most of mine have already been mentioned. Chuck, Stargate Universe, Smallville, Dr. Who, Rome, Sparticus, Tudors, V. Eureka and Warehouse 13 coming up next month on sci-fi. i actually started liking Sancturary though the first season took a bit to get into it.

not into comedies much. or "normal" dramas.

Alias i enjoyed when it was running. also Lost, Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, Dollhouse, even the Terminator TV show had its moments among the done/cancelled shows.

i usually end up only following maybe a half dozen shows a season tops.

Supernatural has been one of those shows i kinda wanted to get into but now am so hopelessly behind i don;t even try to watch it now. maybe i'll netflik it one day but not sure.

So I've seen the first three Avatar: Last Airbender episodes and I like it!  The show's adorable!  It's definitely more of a kids' show than adult anime but it's cute!  I think I'll keep watching it, I'm endeared with Ang now. And the pet monkey-bunny thingie.  8(

When I was searching for it I found that the live-action movie to be released later this year was directed by M. Knight Shyamalan.   The cast is a bunch of kids I've never heard of, save for Jackson Rathborne of Twilight fame and Dev Patel (the slumdog millionaire).  And um...Aasif Mandvi from the Daily Show...go figure...heh.

Looks like the movie might be fun too, based on the trailer...

I cannot believe i missed this thread for so long!

Ok, none of these may appeal, but I'll toss them out, just in case :)  I watch a LOT while working out and/or flying out to Blaek:

Rome - both seasons were outstanding.  A must try. Must.

LOST - Adored this.  5 seasons out now, 6 on its way.  Or maybe it is the 7th that is last (this season) In any case LOVE it.  I'll probably watch the entire thing again once I get through the last season.

The Office
- I enjoy the humor.  I was trying to go sequentially but not all Office episodes are created equal.  Some true brilliance here, though.

The Good Wife
- Really enjoying this.  Smart show.

MAD MEN
! Holy cow. woman, WATCH it.  Faaaantastic.

I'll watch all the FoodNetwork competitions - the kids and I are addicted to the Next FoodNetwork Star and such.  The cake competitions get old, though.

Entourage - very well written, funny and fun

When I'm desperate, Sex in the City never fails to entertain me, even when I've seen the episode several times.  True classics for me.

Big Love
- I like it! I always get pulled back in

I just watched the first episode, second season of True Blood and I really didn't like it.  I didn't like the characters. /shrug

I just saw an episode of Moonlight.  I don't normally like cop shows, but the fact that it's a vampire P.I. makes the cop thing okay...  And the verdict is....

I am IN LOVE with Mick.  Madly in love!  He's my new favorite.  I have no idea who the actor is, never seen him before.  But he's won me over.   He's handsome in that unexpected sort of way.  And the brooding, the angst,  he's very endearing.

I've a long night and day ahead of me so I'll get to see the rest of the episodes.

Thanks again!

Moonlight for me was kind of ehh. I normally enjoy vampire shows/movies and such , I played in a Vampire the Masquerade LARP for 7-8 years. True Blood and Moonlight neither one really hold my attention though , might be the lack of lore/history behind the whole vampire myth with them though. They actually had a show based on the White Wolf vampires though I can't recall the name of it. That show had some interesting bits though they lost me when they were deviating from the White Wolf written stuff.

Most of my shows are down for the season , though I still watch Burn Notice and some of my anime ... speaking of which I need to go look for the new Bleach episode now ....

But so far it's entertaining!  I've seen episodes 3 and 6.  Will probably watch a few more tonight, not like I'll be getting any sleep...

And I think there was another show based on Vampire the Masquerade which I remember seeing and hating it, but I think the name was The Kindred or The Embraced or something...  I thought it was pretty bad, and the clans weren't fully represented.  The only thing I liked about the show was that it took place in San Fran, because San Fran has secretly more vampires than New Orleans.  It's true!  I know this!

Kindred the Embraced or something to that effect , the storyline for the show had alot of potential ... the way they did it just sucks. They need to start making good vampire shows/movies again. Would be great compared to all the sparkly vampire crap and the whiny "I wanna be human again" vampires. They should have just talked Anne Rice into letting them continue the Lestat movies ... and cut the Queen of the Damned movie out of the picture and remade it an actual good movie that actually followed the books (Since it was parts of The Vampire Lestat and parts of Queen of the Damned)
Title: Re: TV show recommendations

Oh...Anne Rice...  She was my best friend through junior and high school...  You know, I love her vampire chronicles but I really REALLY love the Mayfair witches saga.  "The Witching Hour" and "Lasher" still my fave books by her.  I even casted the movie in my head!  I'd love to see Memnoch made into a movie too.  Although I think the Mayfair witch chronicles are long enough to be made into a series too.  The last book I read of the witches was "Merrick" which is was a hybrid that combined both the witches and the vampires (Lestat, Louis, etc working with Merrick), I can only assume the rest of the series included both worlds.

new shows i've started watching

Covert Affairs-  spy series sort of like Alias Lite, more humor and the agent is a newbie who finally won her first fight in episode 2 (after losing her first 2). she's no Sydney that's for sure but plays more of a smartass type than kickass.

Haven- FBI agent sent to investigate wierd doings in the town of Haven where she runs into a personal mystery as well and decides to hang around for a bit to investigate while all sorts of X-Files-ish stuff happens around her. best part- the people living there are all "well, that's just Haven for you."

don;t recall if i mentioned these two already

Warehouse 13 and Eureka- Warehouse is in season 2 now and eureka's gotta be around season 3 or 4 by now.

Exuming this as I didn't want to start a new thread :)

I've recently started to read the "Sword of Truth" novels and I must admit I enjoy the story. I just discovered there was a show based on the story (apparently entering second season) and I was wondering if anyone had a look at it. The reason I ask is that the few pictures I saw made me think of the Hercules show.... so let's say I'm doubious at best  ^-^

I watched a large part of the first season of "Legend of the Seeker". It had its moments...but was not fantastic. I watched it mostly because "beggars can't be choosers", when it somes to sword and sorcery TV shows.

Season 2 recently came out on DVD I think (and is being replayed on TV), but I don't think it got picked up for a third season.

EDIT: OK, I confess. I watched it because Bridget Regan (Kahlan) is dreamy. Long dark hair, blue eyes, white medieval dress (complete with ample cleavage), rides a horse, fights in slow motion with daggers, and has magical powers. <swoon>  :smitten:
