You may have already heard: Gary Gygax passed away today ( http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/welcome&dcmp=ILC-DND062006FP ).  :(

I started playing D&D when I was 8 or 9, back in 1980, when the 1st Edition Players Handbook had just come out.  My friends and I made up the rules as we went along.  We probably didn't know what the rules really were until my best friend Justin sat down and read them, and then decided we should play by them, and started his own campaign, which lasted until he went off to college.

I met my partner at the AD&D campaign he was running--Justin and his friends dragged me to the game one Friday night, and that was how I met Rob.  I became the "DM's Familiar" (boy, was I familiar with the DM).

All of us who played EQ owe Gygax at least some small debt for our years and years of enjoyment.

Rest in peace, Gary.

Heh.  I was just going to link that one.

It choked me up as much as the baby brother one did.
