No Sound on my Computer!

OS: XP

Sound: Creative

The sound works just fine when tested using MSN's IM program but won't give me a peep otherwise.

I've checked under control panel/sounds (all fine) device manager (all fine) Creative's panel (all fine!)

Nothing I can find is actually muted.

It is something REALLY obvious (yes they are on and working...remember, they worked with IM) and they were working last night.

And I've restarted my computer...just in case.

HELP!

Please?

You might try unplugging and replugging it in.  Just to make sure that it didn't get giggled loose.  In my house my kids are famous for doing that.

What other games have you tried it with? EQ2 has it's own internal settings for sound, so you might want to check those too.

doesn't work.

See.

Last night, I played a game which was surprisingly loud.  Like obnoxiously loud.  So I clicked SOMEthing that turned off the sound.  I can't figure out what I did.

I went for the speaker icon on the icon tray, but that shows ready to go, nothing muted.

As does the sound under control panel.

And like I said, it works just fine when I 'test' using MSN's IM.

I'm sure it is something simple, but I don't know what it IS.

Could you try setting all volume  levels to 100%, then playing something? Sometimes if a volume slider is down to 50% it's still so quiet you can't hear it.

This is getting to the point where you might want to sit down and give Creative Tech Support a call. They'll walk you through reactivating everything on your soundcard, and I'm sure they have a method of resetting the driver and software back to factory settings if that doesn't work.

Also, it occurs to me that there are usually two different speakers on a desktop PC: One is the big speakers EQ2 uses, and the other is a little internal speaker that the OS and hardware tends to use. Maybe your internal speaker is working, but the other speaker is unplugged, and turned off? Also check your settings for 2 speakers/4 speakers/5.1 Audio to make sure it's correct.

I finally found the trouble shooter for my sound.  Went through it and realized that my driver wasn't digitally signed.

I'd recently turned on my auto updates so I could update my MSN IM.  This is when all the trouble started.

So...

Somehow between the auto updates this morning and doing whatever I did with the trouble shooter actually got my sound back :) I'm very very happy

Well... golden tip: get rid of MSN. You can use your account in Digsby, which is another messenger client.
You will prevent a *LOT* of problems when uninstalling MSN.

Huh. I"m tempted.

I'm still having trouble with the video on MSN.  Very annoying :(
