QuoteSome other things to keep in mind.  Quicktime will often "take over" the Flash plugin.  If you see a Quicktime symbol with a question mark where the Flash content should be, it means that Quicktime has taken over handling of Flash files.  And we can handle that, if that is the case.

BINGO.

Blue shield with a question mark. Gotta be QT.  And UNinstalled it a few days ago, here it is agian on my task bar.

/starts to hate QT.

Help?

I can't comment on journals now, either :(

Completely removing Quicktime is very difficult, and once it installs it likes to spontaneously revive itself.. it's almost as bad as AOL's software.

Have you tried installing Firefox? Seriously, that's the quick fix for you. It has much better plugin handling.

I'll let Ime explain how to fix the QT/Flash thing.. I haven't done that in a long time.

iTunes uses Quicktime, and is needed for it.  So if you use iTunes, that may be why it revived itself.

In any event, if you do see that blue shield question mark dealie in place of where you see a flash file ... Open the Quicktime Control Panel (typically done by Going to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Quicktime), select the Browser tab (or select "Browser Plug-in" from the drop-down menu in Quicktime 6 or earlier). Click the "Mime settings" button and uncheck "Flash media" or "Flash file" under "Miiscellaneous" and restart your browser if you had it open.

/sighs in frustration

Ok, when I click start, I don't see settings. If I go to 'control panel' it doesn't give me a Quicktime option (which I didn't expect but thought I'd check all the same)

When I tried to double click or right click the Q on my task bar, it won't let me do anything but exit.

I looked for QT in start > programs and I don't see it anywhere.

I did 'uninstall' QT from my Start > programs > QT >uninstall feature, so maybe that's why I can't seem to find it now using that route.

In any case, I don't use iTunes (anymore, since it stopped working for me over a year ago) and even though I have removed it countless times from my machine, it persists to the point of having start >program > iTunes STILL there.

Let's try this again? What can I do?

Long solution I honestly don't feel comfortable in doing / explaining unless I had that compy in front of me.

Short solution is to reinstall quicktime and then go to its control panel and make sure that its not handling the flash.  You might have to reinstall flashplayer (yet again) to make sure its handling those file types.

Short short solution is to stop using Internet Exploder altogether and use another browser, like Mozilla or Firefox.  Will still have to tell the computer, by way of reinstalling quicktime, to NOT use quicktime.  (Yes, there's an alternative for that, but again, too lengthy and whatnot to even do it over the phone).

Okies. I'm installing QT now. I wonder if it will go. Because, as I recall, it was QT that stopped me from using iTunes long ago, because QT wouldn't d/l properly /sighsigh

I have no idea why it suddenly started up on my computer again.

Weeeeeeeeell, I have QT now on my computer. It seems to be happy and have found a home here.

I followed all the instructions and found that Flash media (found under the Miscellaneous tab) is completely unchecked.

I cannot install Flash media player. At all.

Guess it is time to switch from IE to another browser. /sigh

How do I do that again? And is there a way to import my favorites or do I have to build them again?

And which do you recommend, Firefox or Mozilla?

That's an easy one. Mozilla is Firefox.

And yes, it will give you an option to import all your favorites.

Also, though it's not widely known, Microsoft has released IE 7.0 from beta into prerelease (which means they haven't advertised it yet, but it's fully functional.) I use 7.0, and it's shockingly like Firefox, and even has better plugin handling, too. You'd think that Microsoft copied all Mozilla's design work, but a company like Microsoft would NEVER steal software like that. :P

Either one would be fine, but I lean towards Firefox for you because it doesn't have settings integrated with the OS, like IE will.
