I know most folks have serious gaming needs, so I expect most of you are primarily Windows users.  I'm curious if anyone runs a Linux partition for desktop/personal use?

I'm half-way there already, I run mostly open-source apps on my Window laptops these days.  I'm seriously thinking about going with Ubuntu for my desktop since I don't use it for much these days.

I used to run some variant of Mandrake exclusively on my laptop quite some time ago for development projects and such, but I'm so far out of the loop now, it's not even funny.

A friend/former colleague of mine really seems to enjoy test driving the different flavors of Linux, and I remember him giving lots of praise to Ubuntu.  Hmmm.  Now that I think about it, I believe he burned me a copy of Mandriva or some such not too very long ago, but I haven't done anything with it.  I can't even remember where I put the discs.  Hmmm.  It's gonna bug me trying to remember what I did with them now...

I'm still scared of trying to run Linux on a laptop, so my old gaming PC will have to be it.

Nonetheless, I burned the live disk of Ubuntu and booted my laptop with it.  It ran perfectly fine, even recognizing an USB keychain when I plugged it in.  Why is it that Ubuntu is free, comes with an office productivity suite (Open Office) and can fit it all on a single CD (700 MB) when MS Vista eats a honking 15 GB of hard drive space and you still have to shell out money for Office?

Because MS Vista is compatible with computer science methodology dating back 3 decades or more. It's full of so much junk it's not even funny, all to make people who run programs based on DOS 2.0 or OS/2 Warp happy.
