Oh see, now you made me go and learn something.
I haven't caught up on all the past Doctor Who episodes. I've seen at least one arc with each Doctor  though, except the Eighth of course, if that counts for something. And every episode with Doctors Ninth, Tenth & Eleventh.
The opinions expressed here are my own and I have my wife's permission to say so.

Watching the old series can be tough for people who came in with the new series.  At its best, the old series is like watching Masterpiece Theatre with cheaper plywood sets and rock quarries. What remains constant throughout both series is The Doctor as a hyper-charismatic figure.

I actually spent nearly 10 months creating DVDs of every Doctor Who episode to replace my old videocassettes.  So I actually have the entirety of the old series on DVD, even audio/production still recreations of the lost episodes. If you ever have a question or want to know one person's opinion about Doctor Who, just ask.

I've really enjoyed the 9th, 10th, and 11th Doctor Who episodes. But I haven't gone back and tried to watch the older stuff.

Even though it's science fiction, I most enjoy the episodes that have an almost gothic horror feel to them (like "Blink", with the Weeping Angels).

The old series is a much different feel.  When I heard about the new series, my fondest wish was that they "make it with a Buffy type feel."  And I never watched Buffy or any of the spinoffs - I just knew that it was good quality, arching storylines, soap-opera aspects and much more focused on interpersonal relationships than the previous generation of SciFi.

I was really afraid that Doctor Who would reboot and be so geared toward being what the old series was that it would only appeal to a niche that couldn't guarantee the longevity of the program.

Coincidentally, I have heard more than once in the media about the new series taking on a "Buffy-like style" since. Which makes me feel a bit prophetic.  :D

The biggest differences you'd see between new and old:
1. The old series is understandably dated.
2. The special effects are often poor, even when considering the dated nature, whereas the new series is on par with modern shows.
3. The old series takes a story and makes it much more drawn out and slower paced than the new series. The earliest stories would often reach to four hours worth of episodes (with the record being 6.5 hours).  Up until the late 70s, seasons would regularly have a 6-episode story.
4. Despite the long nature of individual stories, there were often no running story arcs between episodes, although there are exceptions. (The introduction of The Master, The Key to Time, Trial of a Time Lord, the rebirth of The Master, and perhaps some more tenuous ones.)
5. The characterization of companions was grossly oversimplified, most notably in that they were plucked out of time and space and the writers would devote no stories reflecting on their life and family before the doctor.  Again, some exceptions. (Tegan, in the early 80s had some minimal stuff, Ace, who was the final companion was in some proto-modern episodes where this dynamic did start to matter)

I was in a funk for about a week back in 1991 when I watched Tom Baker regenerate after watching the entirety of of his run on WLIW.

I think Tom Baker ranks in at either #2 or #3 in "most eccentric Briton" as voted in a poll in the UK.  I don't know who #1 is off the top of my head.

Not that I google EVERYTHING, but...
QuoteIn a poll published by BBC Homes and Antiques magazine in January 2006, Baker was voted the fourth most eccentric star. He was beaten by Björk, Chris Eubank and David Icke

I know of David Icke.  He's a former prominent member of the UK Green Party, and he quit, and now does public speaking.  He believes that the governments of the world are run by reptilian beings who have sacrificial orgies in order to maintain their power.  That's just one of the conspiracies he promotes.

Oh well, of course, I thought the reptilian nature of government officials was common knowledge. :-P

I've seen all of the new series, but I haven't watched nearly as much of the old series as I should have. However, my introduction to Doctor Who was some of the 4th Doctor's episodes that my Dad got from the library (He watched the 4th Doctor's episodes when they were first running on tv in the U.S.); so 4 holds a special place in my heart as well.  :smitten:

I used to pretend to watch the Tom Baker stuff on the local PBS affiliate when I was a wee lad, and vaguely remember thinking how strange the show was, criticizing the cheap special effects, and having absolutely no flarkety flarking idea what the heck the show was even about.  Back then, it was Sesame Street or bust, baby!

However, it wouldn't be the first time that a more current incarnation of an older television property actually gave me a far greater appreciation for the stuff that came before it (after I basically ignored the original stuff the first time around).  These days, I consider myself a very fresh convert trying to soak up as much as possible.  Apparantly, I enjoy my eras of television history through reverse chronology.

Well he did become a monk at age 15. What 15-year-old boy enters a monastery? I think he just got weirder from there. Perfect for the Doctor.

You can imagine my joy when my little brother's first serious girlfriend turned out to be a huge Doctor Who fan (sucking my brother into the fandom).  And she even wanted to borrow the first 10 seasons (1963-1973) to watch them.

I'm pretty sure my brother needs to marry her. :smitten:

Please write an introduction to your character, including name, race, gender, class, alignment, god(if any). If you tradeskill or have other talents, please include those as well.

Name: Catri Sage (subject to change based on availability)
Race: Human
Class: Sawbones Smuggler
Crew Skills(tentative) : Slicing, Cybertech, Underworld Trading or Scavenging

Do you have alternate characters on the same server?
For me characters are like potato chips. I can't have just one. I am going to start out with two, the above mentioned smuggler and a Telekinetics Sage, but I will probably roll just about one of everything at some point.

How did you hear of us?
I joined a small guild (just me and the guild leader) that I found on the SWTOR guild site, and after a long time trying to recruit on the forums I posted on a thread for small guilds interested in merging. Vilidius had also posted on the thread for Saga which had fewer members on the TOR site then. The guild I was in did not last, and Saga looked like it was exactly what I had been looking for.

Is there anyone you have gotten to know from our family, IC or OOC?

I have gotten to know many people OOC through the mumble chat nights (Mixxi, ValGith, Vilidius, Reborn, Kael, Menemas, Sigil, Thibidau, Cyrian, Raven, Rumze). I have also done forum Rp with Val Gith, Raven, Cyrian, Thibideau, Kael, and Aerion.

What Roleplay games have you participated in?
I have played WOW off and on for a few years. I didn't Rp in game, but my characters always had some sort of backstory. I played a little bit of Rift. I have also done some Pen and paper RP (D&D 4th edtition, a little Star Wars d20, a little D&D 3.5, and some RP on a friend's home grown system)

What are you looking for as a member of our guild?
I want a group of people to explore the world and build stories with. So far, I feel very much at home and I haven't even spent much time with the guild in game. I hope to be in Saga for many years.

Have you read and agree to our Guild Policies and Guidelines?
Yes.

Please answer the following three questions, IN CHARACTER:

Tell us of your past.

My past? Well there's not too much to tell there. I grew up on Nar Shadaa with my dad and my four brothers. People say it's dirty and noisy and dangerous- and in all fairness they're right, but frack I love that planet. There's always something going on. Dad and my oldest brother Andros run a little machine shop. You name it they'll fix it.

Dad's best friend, a Duros named Monty, runs a little clinic nearby. I got my first job with him when I was twelve cleaning the clinic, running errands, cleaning his tools, and occasionally helping him stop the bleeding from knife wounds. He taught me a few things about keeping people alive over the years. When you get down to it fixing a person isn't so different from fixing a droid.

I spent most of my days helping Monty keep people breathing until one day my brother Javin won a ship in a Pazaak game. I don't know what shocked us more, that somone bet a ship in a Pazaak game or that Javin won. Well, once he had a ship he decided to start a shipping business. He talked me and the Twins (Devron and Jett) into flying The Lucky Draw for him while he took care of arranging jobs. We thought it would only be a few weeks before he ran the business into the ground, but for once one of his schemes worked. After a few years I was able to save up for my own ship. Now the Twins still fly Lucky, and I have my Wildcat.

What hobbies and directives do you presently have?
I guess you could say I'm a fixer. Ships, droids, people, if it's broken I'll fix it. It kind of runs in the family. I'm fond of a good game of Pazaak , although I don't like it if the stakes get too high. I also like an occasional Huttball match, either in the stands or on the field.

I can't say that I have much in the way of directives. I'm out to make a (mostly) honest wage. I'm not adverse to bending a few customs rules, but I'm not a thief. I'll fly near anything anywhere outside of Imp space, but I never and I mean never fly slaves , I don't care how good the credits are.I try to stay out of trouble, be true to my word and do right by my family and friends.

Where do you see yourself in the future?
Nar Shadaa will always have a special place in my heart, but The Wildcat is my home now. It would be wrong to keep a beautiful lady like my Wildcat shut up in a hangar all the time, and I'll go wherever she takes me as long as there are jobs to be had.
