Anyone here like Magic: The Gathering?

There are so many different ways they can go with a movie.
Live action. CGI. Based on playing the game. The stories within the games. Take off of a novel.
I'm interested.

I love Magic: The Gathering. Though I don't follow the lore too much, I just enjoy playing it. I guess I could give the movie a shot, but I am a bit cautious when it comes to movies about games. If they want it at the scale of Lord of the Rings then this could either be awesome or fail spectacularly. Personally I am not sure what I would want them to go for in theme. I'm not sure how they could pull off the 'based on playing the game' thing without just not being LOTR scale. Doing it from the stories within the game could be quite feasible, but also, maybe, just a bit bland.

I love Magic, but don't really have anyone to play the physical game with (it's soooooo tempting to buy some anyway...), but I do try to keep up with the annual digital release. Sadly, last year's was a complete mess and never really worked for me (and many others).

I'm kind of shocked they're doing a movie. Even back when I played it in high school, the lore was kind of a mess and pretty incomprehensible if you didn't read the books, but most of us just played the game and didn't really care. Now, some of the stuff I've seen sounds utterly ridiculous and impossible to follow if you aren't reading ALL of the books. It's like video game franchise lore, but without a video game to actually experience large portions of the lore for yourself, you have to read all of it in novels. That can't possibly make for a good movie.

I haven't played for a few years, but I do hang out with WotC people through my D&D contacts.
I know that the last few years there has been a solid story behind the releases. Each set being part of a wider arc and story. Characters continuing from one set on to another. And the back story of different planes.
I think it could follow one of these storylines or something similar. I would hope for characters I care about, and not generic Planeswalkers throwing cards ala Gambit, but I think it can be done right either way.

I second that. Spellslingers is a really fun show. Poor Jesse though, he should have just been a land baron instead of a wizard...

I really liked MTG back in the day, though I have long since lost contact with the game. My crew kind of left it behind, and therefore so did I.

A movie? Could be good...or really bad. We'll see eh?

On a card related game note, I do really dig the designs of both Dominion and Ascension. They lack the potentially annoying rarity/collect-ability/high cost issue. Very fun to play in my experience.

If you like deck builders, you should check some others (I may have recommended some of these before... I don't remember):
Thunderstone/Thunderstone Advance: Diablo-esque dungeon crawling, hero leveling deck builder. Base rules are a bit sluggish, but there are some really good variants that make it shine.

Tanto Cuore: If you felt Dominion needed more anime french maids... Available on iOS.

Legendary: Very similar to Thunderstone and Ascension, has some nice combo mechanics. Obviously a good one if you like the Marvel universe. I think this is supposedly in development for iOS, but I don't remember if that was confirmed, a rumor, or something they were simply looking into.

Core Worlds: My personal favorite deck builder, by far. Thematic, excellent drafting mechanics with more cohesive long-term strategies, a set pacing that feels tight and fluid, and has a very satisfying climax (where most deck builders tend to wind down a lot by the end as you just kind of go through the motions scraping together the last few points where you can).

Lord of the Rings/DC Comics Deck Building Games: If you thought Ascension needed to be even lighter and more random. These are as light as deck building gets, for better or worse. Warning, theme is kind of thread bare.


Though, outside of CCGs/LCGs, nothing really captures... the "magic", if you will, of Magic. Most deck builders steer clear of direct conflict, preferring light screwage or none at all.

I am trying to pick and choose just how many of these I buy, but love feedback on what might be a good option I have not jumped on yet.

I looked at Thunderstone, and sort of chose Ascension over it. In part because I thought it would be good for my kids as well as occasional all-oldster gamer play. It definitely is more random. (Which is why my favorite of this genre is Dominion currently.)

I am planning on avoiding the comic based games...I assume their life spans will be fairly short. (Ending as soon as a license runs out, etc.) Same deal with LotR. Core Worlds however is on my radar as an interesting one.

I tend to play more board and less card games. But a good deck builder can be quite enjoyable. Probably if i looked into another card based game right now, the other option I might have an interest in is the non-collectible Cthulhu game.

The comic-license stuff may or may not have a short life span, but the rate they are firing out expansions, you will have plenty of goods to play for a long time. Legendary has actually gotten some really good support. DC Deck Builder... not so much, really. Most agree it really only works as a gateway deck builder, but if you're already into the genre, just skip. I know I've forgotten some other notable deck builders, there many (also many junky ones). The genre really exploded in the past 2 years, but seems like it's quieting down.

LCGs are really the best way to go for a CCG-like experience without sinking in countless hundreds to make decks. The Cthulhu LCG is pretty good, but I think the Game of Thrones one is my favorite.

My favourite card game right now is Pathfinder Adventure Card Game.
It's not  CCG. It's a deck builder that you carry over from game to game.
It's D&D with a deck of cards for your character.
I don't even play Pathfinder. But the Card game is cool because you make a kind of story as you play without a DM.
Obviously RP-lite.

As for those mentioned, I like Dominion a lot. My wife enjoys it so that makes it even better.

We should clearly play some Dominion sometime! I learned it playing with 3-4, so I actually like it even better multi-player as opposed to one on one.

As for Cthulhu vs. GoT card game...yeah, both of those could be good targets I think. What makes you prefer GoT Sroth?

Mostly my desire isn't to buy more games just now, but to play more of them. I have a lot of games to play.

Sorry, left this open in a tab to reply, then forgot that's what the tab was open for.

CoC is mostly indirect conflict where players fight over goals (the story cards). It is possible to send characters to a story unopposed.

In GoT, the conflict is direct, you are sending characters to your opponent, and they must be answered or the opponent suffers for it. It's got the teeth that Magic has, and a very interesting, diverse system that's fun to explore in deck construction. It also feels like a game that relies a little bit less on luck of the draw, and more on long term strategy. I really like the way GoT handles resources and planning, allowing you to really take control of your deck better than most other card games.

Pathfinder card game sounds hella awesome. Especially the rp lite mechanic - I wonder if I can trick rumze 2 into playing.

You really should check it out.
We just ad a scenario that ended with no blessings left and the last fight needed a 14 or higher, and we rolled 14. It was a lot of tension and very cool.
