You know where my cellphone is now?

At the bottom of a sewer :p

I noticed there was a manhole cover missing in my neighborhood, so I called 9-1-1 to see if they could have someone come cover it before someone fell in and got hurt.  They said I called the right number, but would have to call back on Monday because on weekends the county crews only respond to emergencies and this won't qualify.

So I went home and got my wheelbarrow to put it over the open manhole (upside down).  I was leaning over, adjusting the wheelbarrow, and my cellphone fell out of my shirt pocket (where I'd put it after calling 9-1-1) and slid neatly into the tiny crack still left uncovered (the reason I was adjusting the wheelbarrow).

Sploosh.

I could still see it down there... like 8 feet down... taunting me.  There wasn't much water at the bottom, and handholds on the sides, but honestly I didn't feel like climbing into a sewer to get the damn thing.  With my luck this weekend, a snake or a giant sewer-gator or something woulda gotten me.

Now I gotta requisition a new phone from work and explain what happened :p

A part of me wishes to commiserate on the loss and subsequent having-to-explain-the-loss of a work phone/pager/etc.

The other part is cracking up over the vision of a little cell phone floating in a sewer making rude gestures and screaming ugly phrases in a tiny eensy voice.

Now you can taunt people that might be walking by the manhole.  When they're near the hole, call your cell phone from the house.  Make em think and or twitch.  heh

It's now become an inside joke between my wife and I to sing the Nokia ringtone every time we drive by that manhole.
