WORST VIRUS EVER --- CNN ANNOUNCED.


A new virus has just been discovered that has be en classified by
Microsoft as the most destructive ever. This virus was discovered
yesterday afternoon by McAfee. This virus simply destroys Sector Zero
from the hard disk, where vital information for its functioning are
stored.

This virus acts in the following manner:

It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with the title:


"A Card for You".

As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened the computer freezes so
that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+ del keys or the reset
button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently
destroying the hard disk. Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused
panic in New York, according to news broadcast by CNN.

This alert was received by an employee of Microsoft itself.

So don't open any mails with subject: "A Virtual Card for You." As soon
as you get the mail, delete it! Even if you know the sender!

Please pass this mail to all of your friends.

Forward this to everyone in your address book.

I'm sure most people, like myself, would rather receive this notice 25
times than not at all.

...and when you do email it to your friends, please refrain from using the subject line: "A Card for You"  :P

I forget the command, but there used to be a DOS command that restored your boot sector. One would think that the Windows Disk would have a restore utility for that as well.

oh crap I got an email today from evite.com from some guy who can't come to the party friday and I think the title was "a card for you" or something. Can Evite pass the virus?

I'm looking all over CNN.com and not finding this story. Lyrima, when did you hear about it?

Edit: McAfee has not launched a Threat Alert on this. the last major alert was on the 14th. Hmmm...

Not sure. It sounds like a very similiar story in Snopes, but has nothing on the 'yesterday in New York' part.

Yeah, just to make sure people feel safe when I send E-cards, I always use a subject line like...

"Important!  Please log in and verify your checking account information"

or

"You've inherited a million dollars from a relative in Nigeria, I can help you get it"

or

"HOT XXX DONKEY PICS INSIDE!!!!"

If you go to the 'postcard' snopes, (the above link) it tells about how it is verified, as of June 2007; but that there are also plenty of hoaxes as well.

DON'T DOWNLOAD/LINK TO STUFF VIA EMAIL UNLESS YOU WERE TOLD BY A REAL LIFE PERSON THAT THE EMAIL WAS OK. JUST THINKING IT WAS SENT FROM THEIR EMAIL ADDRESS IS NOT ENOUGH.

Viruses and Trojans and Worms are real, and having your computer break sucks.  :-\

Depends on the virus and your network settings. It will probably just effect the computer it's opened on, but a more sopisticated virus might be able to cross your network.
