So when I was pregnant and told Dr Dirkk's grandmother that I was making curtains for Ian's nursery, she gave me a sewing machine. It's old and used and not fancy, but that was super duper fine by me! Why buy new when you can get used free, right?

When I was little, my mother and grandmother sewed all the time. Heck, half the dresses I had as a girl they made. So while I haven't used a sewing machine in YEARS, I'm not totally ignorant of them.

Well this sewing machine she gave me didn't have a book with it, being used and all. So, after procrastinating for...well, I got it when I was pregnant and I just started messing with it a few weeks ago... I threaded how I thought I was supposed to, made sure the bobbin was in, and did a test line. Everything looked GREAT for about 6 inches, then it got all gnarled up and made an angry noise at me.

Last time mom was at my house I had her take a look at it. She couldn't figure it out either. I thought all was lost...

But Lo! At the birthday party yesterday, the mom there was showing me some of the CUTE diapers she made her son and now I REALLY wanna make diapers for Ian with cute designs and stuff so I looked up repair shops in my town. After calling 5 of them, I finally found one that said that not only do they repair sewing machines, they repair my BRAND (New Home...I'd never even heard of it till I got it)! Yay!

So soon I'll be whipping out sewed goodies! I'm so stoked!

I know that was random, but I'm excited and I know you people will humor me.

Sewing machines were among the first MMOs. Women would gather at the loom and gab and talk while creating something.

So.

My daughter turned 9 this May. May 31st.  She still plays imaginary games starring herself.  Not much for dolls of any sort, she likes costumes.  Bless her, when asked she told me she likes to create stories about the subjects she learns in Social Studies at school.

omg, my daughter. I just love and admire her so much!  :smitten:

So!

She wanted, because they studied colonial days, an apron and bonnet for her birthday.

Do I have the money to buy her a Laura Ingalls (sp?) outfit? Uh, no.

Do I have the money to buy her some fabric and a pattern? Yep.

Heh. The last time I touched a sewing machine I was a Girl Scout.

Well, there sits the fabric and pattern. I did look at it, but figuring out what needs to be folded, what not, what cut and how was just completely overwhelming.  I have a friend who sews, but she is away ...all summer... ! :(

Yay working sewing machines and knowledgeable mommies!

Maybe I'll take another look at the apron pattern. How hard is a long narrow rectangle and a larger wider rectangle?
