Technical question: is this really possible?

Those following my epic odyssey of getting ADSL and upgrading to a new pc will have some idea of my current situation.

Guild Wars 2 has been essentially unplayable with my current system. I did manage to tinker around with some characters, but it wasn't fun. Mobs were often invisible and/or not positioned where they appeared to be and my character moved like trudging through knee deep mud. It only got worse when I tried playing a Charr; completely pointless.

Anyway, after yet another round in the ring with Telkom (my last positive post was a false alarm), I finally got my ADSL upgraded to 4MB yesterday. With all that speed just sitting there (still waiting for new pc), I decided to patch a bunch of games and then thought I'd launch GW2 while I was at it.

I don't really get how, but it appears that I can actually play. I thought my 2.5ghz dual-core e5200, 2gb ram, and GeForce 9600GT weren't up to the job but the difference in switching from the 3G connection to the 4mb adsl (didn't try it with the 1mb adsl) is astounding. Nothing else has changed, as far as I know.

Order for the new system is in. By comparision, it's too mouthwatering to go back now. Still, can the internet connection really have made such a difference when it appeared to be a slow graphics/processing issue?

I can tell you that I have played on my laptop with my wifi at home and on my 3g phone network at work.
I don't see that much difference, but there is definite lag issues.
I didn't see the invisible mobs that you mention but it's a pretty beefy laptop.
The opinions expressed here are my own and I have my wife's permission to say so.

Generally speaking, your computer moves at the speed of the slowest component involved. If your internet connection is terrible, no amount of great graphics card, hard drive, memory, CPU, etc. upgrading is going to improve your experience much, beyond the limits of your network connection. Connection speed has a huge impact, which is why broadband is such a game changer.
