yes, very sad indeed. and incredibly unlucky. says the stinger poked in under his ribs and actually stuck into his heart. stingray stings are usually not lethal. unless of course the toxin gets right into the heart. damn unlucky.

I still can't believe it. It's very sad indeed. Although, I can remember remarking numerous times while watching that show that he was gonna get killed one of these days. He just put himself in that position so much. I don't really want to believe it and I think the world really did lose a conservationist and just a really good person. I think it's an absolute shame and I feel for his family right now.

I often had the same thought Gwenae--I was certain one day he'd make a mistake and get killed by something dangerous.

But this sound more like a fluke accident.

It definitely was a fluke and I had always thought a crocodile would get him, but a stingray? No way! He was just so full of life. He really did make a difference and it's pretty unreal that he's gone.

Steve and Terri used the same brand of cloth diapers on their kids that I use on Ian. The company made special eddition khaki ones just for them. I gotta try to find some on ebay.

and what makes it worse is that from what i've heard is that he wasn't even filming the stingray when he was stung but that apparently he was swimming above it and the cameraman was below it and the stingray freaked out/felt threatened and lashed out at the nearest one who happened to be him.

Yes... this is very sad, I feel for his family, and do genuinely feel he was a good person.. but..

this is a man I have seen bitten by venomous snakes on the face..

..who climbed into a crocodile enclosure while holding his one year old son, and tossed wads of raw meat to the crocs...

..who has been bitten, stung, stabbed, poked, prodded, and mauled by almost every species of animal in existence.

... his death is the first reported death by stingray in **3** years...

...now, once again, i say, this is a tragic and sad event..

... but..

...you have to see the ironic humour in it too...

Well, I remember they did an interview with him once, where they asked if he was ever afraid of getting killed by an animal someday and he said "Well, if it does happen, I hope it's on camera!"

My thoughts are that if there was a way for Steve Irwin to pass on, getting killed by a stingray on camera is pretty much how he would have wanted it. That said, I'm sure he and his family would have wished for it to happen in 20 years or more from now..

Mostly because it's sanctimonious garbage. He did more for demystifying and making people less afraid of animals than ever he scared them. If you watched his shows, you learned it was important to understand the animal, and respect them.. but you didn't have to stay 200 feet away at all times to do that. Just my opinion, though.
